Shannon Burke To The Big 810!

Heard this yesterday - looks like more pay for play for Burke? Think it had anything to do with Guetzloe being shown the door? Or was that a "didn't pay for his play" move?

Hope it all works out for all involved.

Lets step back for a minute and take an intelligent look. If this guy had any potential other than a brief life as a sideshow, then somebody would have hired him. Station reps would have been lining up on 33rd Street to make a pitch. The jails are full of people who can blame their actions on the bottle, the needle, the powder or whatever substance you choose. So what's the big deal here? For all practical purposes, this guy is trading on the criminal acts he committed with the victums being his wife and the dog. Was it unfortunate? Yes! Was it wrong? Yes! Was it because of booze? Could be. Since he has "paid his debt to society" DOES NOT MEAN he is now magically cured of a drinking problem! Some of you who are fawning all over him want to think that, but any substance abuse expert will tell you beating a possible problem in that area takes time, lots of time and you are never cured!

What he has done is serious, serious stuff! He needs to thank God it wasn't worse. This isn't time for radio theatrics. As I said before, if it was thought this gentleman was such a GREAT OPPORTUNITY, he would have been HIRED. Instead, what do we have? An arrangement on some bush league, fourth rate operation which can't even put out a product which passes quality control. Even tiny, old equipment WOTS in Kissimmee sounded a billion times better than this excuse for a radio station!

And oh yes, if Salem even thought he was a worthwhile opportunity, they would have kept him on despite, according to a source of mine, they weren't paying their bill.

Anyone who would make that kind of statement doesn't know Salem -- especially how they operate in a market the size of Orlando. Syndication and pay-to-play are what their talkers are all about in non-Top 10 markets. See WGUL in Tampa. Only the top tens have local talent, and then it's usually only in morning drive.

But this doesn't mean Burke is going to help 810 much, if any.

If I read Tom Taylor's newsletter correctly, WEUS will be offering the time to Shannon gratis.

Burke gets the time free (kinda): he's not paying for it up front but does split the revenue with the station 50-50.

Come to think of it, this could be the wave of the future for compensation in radio. Why fiddle with employees, benefits, etc.? If you bring the numbers, we both Get Happy. If not, Sayonara....

Wish mr. burke the best in beating his demons but the only thing that made his WTKS show interesting was his partying ways. Now that he's not doing that, why listen??? AA radio??? no thanks.

I'd imagine he'll be heading back to his original, somewhat conservative talk/rants. "AA radio;" I feel woozy just thinking about it.....

Hear the first hour of today's show...WOW...very lame...he already sounds bored...when will the show take a turn towards a Real Radio style...

I do feel bad for the guy. Not to say he had made much of a name for himself prior, but JHC, I tuned in yesterday for the first time and the show open was 30 minutes of talk about lost dogs. It's a tough price to pay for wanting to hear your voice on the radio. The commercial breaks were filled with promos for other shows on the station, and pleas for advertisers. Don't figure anyone can even hear this outside the Apopka city limits. IMHO, the guy would have a better shot (no pun intended) to start someplace where he wasn't the butt of every joke (like the aforementioned, sorry but it's too easy). I reckon the offers aren't rolling in and background checks would be a challenge tho, otherwise he'd probably have been out long ago.
