Sharks are NOT Mammals

CBS 4 reporting on the recent rash of shark attacks had one of their reporterettes out on the beach this week. She [ won't use her name because it will embarass a usually fine reporter]said that there were "no reports of these mammals" in these waters.

Sharks are not mammals... unless you are referring to certain unscrupulous human preditors.

Sharks are fish.

Then again, I have known some mammals with that name who bear a striking resemblance to their pisces counterpart.

Are you here to nitpick every mistake made on the air?

Just curious, because that is all this thread is doing, is nit-picking a tiny mistake that they made on WBZ-TV.

Or maybe it's to start another we hate WBZ-TV pointless thread...

Just call them Sharks!

Undoubtdely, WBZ-4 did this story after the recent spate of shark attacks off the Florida panhandle, including one that killed a 14-year-old girl.

I presume similar stories aired on local newscasts in other coastal areas over the last few days.

I had a dream last night that the most ridiculous post was on Radio-Info.

Ha. It was true. HAHA

Hey, its big market TV on a CBS O&O, no less. The reporter SHOULD do a better job than to make such a fundamental flub. That kind of sloppiness is bad for WBZs credibility. It makes you question what other facts the reporter gets wrong.

If bringing up this subject was stupid, then so is half of the other stuff on this board. You guys need to chill out.

Thanks. I didn't expect a personal attack for this post.
I wasn't attacking the reporter. In fact, I didn't and won't mention her name.
But the NEWS should be in the FACT business and sharks are not mammals.
Seems like the BZ'ers are trolling [ no pun intended] this board. And I thought the RKO crowd was bad.

I expect more from CBS 4. This is a mistake I would expect Fox 25 or Ch. 7 to make not 4.

Wasn't a personal attack, I simply asked what was the point. It comes across as nitpicking.

Then state this in your original post. State WHY you think this was a bad thing to say, you know expand on it. If you hate WBZ, then state your case as to WHY you hate them. Give us more, man!

> Seems like the BZ'ers are trolling [ no pun intended] this

Nope. I have no connection to them.

You shouldn't expect this mistake on ANY station, regardless it is WBZ or KMULE in East Podunk. Especially from WFXT or WHDH.

Wasn't a personal attack however.

Yeah, same here. Im in no way a BZ'er...but i mean, cmon. Mistakes happen...and this is a NOTHING mistake. Saying "upwards to 12 planes may have been hijacked" is a big mistake. This is just a case of a producer not visiting the New England Aquarium in a bit.

Not to be personal but this is the most idiotic reply I have ever read here.
I stated a simple fact that a shark is not a mammal but a FISH and you assumed that I hate WBZ. Totally biz-R.

Please for your own safety stay away from any sharpe objects or fireworks this weekend ;)

I don't agree. As someone who knows a thing or two about what goes on in a newsroom, I can assure you that such a "mistake" is unacceptable. It was a fundamental factual error. If the reporter cannot get such a simple fact correct, what else does he/she screw up? That's what the viewer will ask.

No, that was an unacceptably stupid mistake. And, I really don't care which station did it.

That being said, a reporter who is "good" enough to get a job at a top 10 market O&O should absolutely be better than to refer to a shark as a mammal - during a report about shark attacks! It's not *NOTHING* journalistically because it was about the FOCUS of the report.

Tells me that he spent more of his day screwing off than he actually spent working. And, it does reflect poorly on a station that tries to position itself as a TV and radio news leader.

WBZ's news director should chew his a__ off for that one.
