Sharon Reed...Sportscaster.

Why is it WOIO/WUAB insists on having Sharon Reed as part of their Browns and Cavaliers' coverage.

I mean, she is all over the place on the stations' pre-game shows for both teams.

What are her qualities as a sports analyst?

The best things she does for the stations are "The Buzz" and disrobing for sweeps.

How does that qualify her as a legitimate sports expert?

Maybe I'm just an old fuddy duddy, but I just don't get it.

I'm still looking when the station, as a whole, has had any credibility when it comes to anything. When I come across it, I'll let you know. ;)

Was this thread put up just to get me to weigh in? :D Come on, bashing 19 is like eating candy for me...

But, surprise! If Sharon buckles down and doesn't get overly "cute", and sticks to interviewing, she is not at all bad on the station's Browns coverage.

I mean, Ms. Reed is certainly no Lesley Visser, but she settled in after a few weeks and the last time I saw her, she cut to the point, asked crisp, concise questions, and didn't, well, ask any of the football players out on a date.

Don't get me started about her "will you join me...(uhh, on the set of our Monday Browns highlights show, I mean! Honest!)" line. She only did this the first couple of weeks, though...maybe Bob Golic and Hanford Dixon chuckling at it on the Sunday night show made her stop...

First thoughts re: the criticisms about Sharon Reed's work: who cares?

I don't read this board very often...but when I do, I come here to get information on format, technical, or personnel changes that I missed elsewhere. But...most of the posts are complaints and criticisms of virtually everybody who's on radio or TV.

OK...it's a "free country" to say or post what you want....I get that. I just wonder: do any of you actually like ANYBODY you see or hear in broadcasting?

And, since most posters either have never worked in commercial broadcasting or aren't currently in the business...how valid are your mostly negative opinions?????

Yet Another Long OA Post

You make some very valid points.

Day to day, I don't really pay attention to professionals *doing their job* in the course of broadcasting in this region. 99% of the time, they do the job, do it well and that's really not worth a comment.

In the case of Ms. Reed, it's different. The station has basically exploited her. Well, maybe that's not exactly the right wording, as she seemed quite happy to be exploited.

And it's not JUST the "Body of Art" thing, though that's certainly a lot of the fuel that started this fire. Ms. Reed, along with a couple of other women at Reserve Square, wear tight, revealing outfits, so much so at times that I wonder if the local strip joint is providing the costumes. (This is not by accident, either, as 19's general manager is already noted in other markets for imploring his female staff to wear such outfits.)

But as I noted in my earlier reply here, once you get past that and past her "cute" attempts to act seductive around Browns players (so much so that even the show's on-air staff was taken aback on the air!), Sharon Reed has done a decent job in my own, "one viewer watching" eyes. Despite my posts here and the infamous blog I maintain, I'll say it before and say it again - it's just one guy's opinion.

So generally, for me, someone has to cross a line in local media before I'll make such comments. The brief fill-in stint by Charlie Minn crossed that line for me, for one. But the day to day "I don't like X anchor or X host/DJ/etc."? I don't have a lot of time for that. I mean, I'm not exactly the biggest fan of WTAM afternoon motormouth Mike Trivisonno, but it's a bit silly to post that day in and day out.

Everyone's got his or her own opinion.

I thought we valued the opinions of everyone. I would think that to those expressing their own opinion that they would be valid, at least in their own mind.

Even though some have not worked in commercial broadcasting or currently in the business I don't think discounting their opinion on that basis alone is very wise. After all "consultants" make their living by providing a fresh perspective not clouded by being in the heat of battle.

I agree with you, however, that constantly harping on the same negative things can get a bit tiring.

No one has said that everything about radio & TV in Cleveland and northeastern Ohio is 100% perfect and overflowing with fantastic creativity.

However....

>I agree with you, however, that constantly harping on the same negative things can get a bit tiring.>

Your comments above echo my central point.

Rarely is there praise for anybody or any station. The never-ending complaining is very, very boring...regardless of the professional background of the posters.

And please produce proof to substantiate this statement.

That's what I thought.

Proof? What are you...8 years old????

Come on "XL"...not all of us who work in broadcasting are permitted to make our identities known...you know that.

Truthfully, anybody who works in the business I've spoken with who's read these radio boards laugh at many of the posts Why? Innaccurate information mostly, and never-ending bashing of media people without even making suggestions on how they'd make things better. Sounds a lot like political discussions, really.

John:

I agree... it might be neat if you can start a thread with what you perceive as the NE Ohio radio highlights! Let's keep it positive and throw kudos where they belong!
