Shawn McKay's Altoona Visit

I looked forward to Shawn McKay's visit. I have not been disappointed! Not only Shawn McKay but Patty Gross back to Altoona and together again. Are they super talented, nah, are they super funny, nah, nah, are they super clever, nah, nah, nah. They are honest, down to earth and genuinely entertaining and likable! I listened to them years ago while I worked for another station.

Now years later I get to hear them again. I have listened while they were featured mornings on Q94 and
later in the morning on WRTA's talk radio this week. I sure hope they decide to return to Altoona radio. Can other morning duo's learn from Shawn and Patty? nah, nah, nah! Other morning duos are super talented, super funny and super clever, at least that's what they think and it comes across in their morning shows.

I've done morning radio, it is not for everyone. It wasn't for me.

So Shawn McKay and Patty Gross thank's for recalling happy morning memories!
Thank you Q94 and WRTA for making it happen.

I hope that the decision is made that brings back Shawn and Patty to Altoona.

What are your thoughts?

The parts that I heard sounded fantastic. Great radio and nothing like what we normally hear on the airwaves in Altoona. This actually would make local radio worth listening to again and I hope it continues. I'd tune in daily and so would the neighbor.

I learned a lot about Def Leppard on Monday morning. I had never known that that they had two deaf dudes in the band. The movie on VH1 Classic failed to mention that fact. So much for trusting the TV. I guess Def Leppard is no different than Beethoven--I'm told he was deaf also.

It seems like the new Q94 studios are the best in Altoona--very impressive.

I'm actually really interested in reading what fryman will post about this week. Something tells me that he probably caught (static-free) every single word that Sean spoke.

Radio has changed so much over the last ten years; fewer owners, more stations, less on-air personalities. When the buzz was that an old colleague was visiting Altoona and would be featured on Q94 Classic Rock and WRTA News/Talk a lot of radio people that I know really sat up to listen. Was Shawn McKay actually coming back to Altoona radio?
I was first told yes, and then I was told he was visiting. Finally I heard he came to town to check out his old stomping ground and that an announcement would be made.

Now I have friends at a number of radio stations in Central Pa. My friends at the “Radio Station Campus” told me that they didn’t know what was happening. They said management was playing their hand close to the vest. They said that they suspected a deal was either in the works or already done. They are anxious for McKay’s return.

My friends at the old frogwarts wetlands tell me that they don’t know for sure. But up until last week some thought that McKay’s “visits” would probably be nothing more than some elaborate telephone visit.

By Wednesday of last week’s Shawn McKay in-person visit I was told that there was concern by a couple of older morning partnerships that McKay may actually be returning. Both of these morning male duo’s had at least one partner who worked with McKay in past years. They know his talent and his local appeal is a threat.

I heard much of McKay’s shows on WRTA and Q94. Lots of phone calls from old friends, Patty Gross, some old liners, it was great! It was the entertaining radio that I remember and have missed. No one in local radio, sorry, but no one brings the interest and entertainment that I enjoyed this past week with Shawn McKay and Patty Gross. The “water cooler” talk was every where.

So is McKay returning to morning radio in Altoona? I haven’t been able to find out. I talked to Shawn while he was here and he was non-committal I do know that some established morning duos are concerned. One on air guy (not morning) said it is amusing listening to some veterans talk what that will mean for them. One of the old thinks it will be no big deal because McKay’s a “has been.” Excuse me! You need to work on your poker face.

If Shawn McKay returns these established a.m. old boys will have to do show prep. Something that according to their performance they don’t do now.

This is the dumbest thing I have ever heard!!!!
Please tell me this is some kind of joke!!!!

Just to clarify...for those who did not listen...and are not familiar with my dry humor which is lame, but I can't help and will probably continue...

The Def Leppard thing involved Sean doing his thing and Patty believing his thing...then also adding a Beethoven comment. I think that's a big part of why the show was so entertaining. I know they both had a great time last week and that was easily detected from the audience perspective.

For someone like myself who has an unhealthy obsession with radio and spends too much time reading about it, talking about it, and posting about it...last week was one of the most exciting things in a long time. I will continue to obsess about radio and expand my knowledge. I am planning to funnel this into getting an internet station broadcasting at some point. I now have the resources, but I have yet to find the time.

Sounds like McKay has mellowed little. Making fun of deaf people. Perhaps McKay will be wearing a hearing aid one of these days and being hearing impaired might not be so damned funny. Ask Denny Pompa about it. Pompa had a great uncle who lost his hearing when he was too close to a dynamite charge in one of the old B & T coal mines. Had to take early retirement and go to work as a tourist guide at the Seldom Seen Mine. Didn't seem to mind the Seldom Seen except for not getting paid union scale. Wake up and smell the coffee McKay!
