Shawn Parr Update

This was forwarded to me by a friend and I wanted to share it will those who may be interested:

"Happy New Year!!

As I sit here at 4am New Years Eve I can’t believe how fast this incredible year has gone by and all that has been given to us in the Country World. Think about it, we started the year Jan 1st 2007 without a Country station on the FM dial but on Feb. 26th Go-Country 105.1 FM was born and because of you we were on the map right away! I was so blessed and honored to be the one to kick off this amazing adventure and haven’t stopped since.

I had to take a moment and tell you how grateful I am for all you have given me with your support, and trust me when I say “without you this wouldn’t have been possible.” Go Country 105 is growing strong and with your help in 2008 will continue to grow and lead the way for country music in all of Southern California!

Think about what you have helped accomplish this year:

Sold out concerts from every major artist!

Millions raised for different charity organizations!

We asked you to help feed the homeless and you doubled our expectations with our friends at The Los Angeles Mission…. Over 36,000 meals!!!

And let’s not forget GO-FEST 2007…..you all went above and beyond the call of duty and we blew the Verizon Wireless away!!

Not to mention the countless number of appearances you came to, and phone calls and emails you wrote to show your support for country music.

In 2008 I will celebrate my 20th year in Country radio in So. Calif. and this is by far the best time I have ever had! I think back on the last year and the best two words I could use to describe my feelings are “Forever Grateful.” You have given me so much and when people ask how I can do all I do and be everywhere with no sleep etc. all I can say is you all give me the energy I need and I am so blessed how can I NOT be everywhere?

Listen, if you thought 2007 was great, I guarantee you haven’t seen anything yet! Look what 2008 has to offer for all of us who love Country Music so much…..

Garth Brooks is back in L.A. for 5 shows!!

Shania is coming back with a new CD!

Taylor Swift starts the year with a big new show! (she is on fire!)

Keith Urban and Carrie Underwood are coming!

DOLLY PARTON is performing for our Go Country 1 year anniversary Parr-ty,

Go-Fest 2008 already being planned,

The Go Country Cruise to the Carribean later next year........

And as for me?

I plan on being at every country show I can possibly make it to and yes, I want to be everywhere in 2008 as well. Tonight I will be on ABC with Dick Clarks New Years Rockin Eve 2008. Tomorrow I will be riding with The Broken Horn Ropers in the 2008 Rose Parade. (Thank you Teresa and Felix, I love your family and thank you for allowing me to be part of it)

The Golden Globes are Jan 13th, I have a new commercial comimg out in Feb,The Shawn Parr Invitational Golf Tournament is April 28th at The Mission Viejo C.C. benefiting The John Tracy Clinic for hearing impaired kids, and those are just a few.

(Whew, I am glad I took a week to recharge my batteries. )

As you can see Country music is alive and well in the Southland and it’s all because of you. I only touched on a few of the incredible events for 2008 and there are so many more being planned. We want to give you what you ask for so listen, do me a favor. If there is something your hearing or not hearing on your radio let us know. This is your station! Oh and if you could tell everyone you know that Go Country 105 is THEE place to find all of today’s hits and yesterdays favorites I would certainly appreciate it.

My good friend Pastor Dudley Rutherford always says “You have got to believe and put your faith in the father” and trust me I do which is why I believe we are so blessed. Pastor Tim tells me I am “Living the Dream” and I absolutely know that is true. So if your ready, Fasten your seatbelts and settle in because 2008 is going to be the best ride we have ever been on in Country Music!!

Thank you again for all you have given me in my 20 year career in So. California. I have never been more passionate about what I do than I am now because I eat, drink, sleep, breath and LIVE COUNTRY MUSIC!

God Bless you and again thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Sincerely,

Shawn Parr"

Is this for real? You have got to be kidding! I have never seen anything more self-centered in my life. Does this guy actually think our lives revolve around him? Like our year was made great because he is in our lives? I love the Pastor part too. I guess he thinks we'll all love him because he believes in God. God wanted him to do Country in LA?
I used to listen to that morning show but lost interest a while ago when it seemed to center all around him. Plus, what he talked about was boring and not relatable to anything in my life. And as a woman, I couldn't stand that girl he has with him either. She has no backbone and just agrees with him all the time.
That email makes me feel good about not listening anymore. Plus he gets a little too racey for my kids to listen as well.

Well, I guess you couldn't tell that the message from Shawn was posted kind of out of context. It is more a message to his fans and supporters (which I think he sends out periodically).

Nothing in it was self-centered. I actually think your post here is more self-centered than Shawn's message to his supporters.

Not self-centred, huh? I've never seen any message from anyone to their fans that read like this. A thank you is great but this is too over the top. It reads like a "high on himself," narcissist wrote this, regardless of who it's for. NOBODY cares that much about or for him...except him. This just says to me, "fake." But, I guess as long as there are people like you who fall for this, then he'll continue to thrive.
You must really idolize this guy then. I really do, after seeing some of your other posts, think that you must work at that station or maybe even be him.
Some advice, worry about yourself and your family and stop wasting all your time defending a bad DJ. I see you post a lot. I for one am done posting about someone who is not worried or cares about anyone but himself. It's been fun but I have a life to take care of. Have a great year and continue to your quest to defend the great one. My kids await their ride to the mall.

I know Shawn Parr has a huge fan base. When KZLA flipped to KMVN in 2006 and Shawn had the plug pulled on him (literally, the station flipped formats right in the middle of his show), there was a tremendous outpouring of rage and tears from listeners, both at losing the popular d.j. and at the way he was let go. Of course, they were also upset over the demise of Country radio in L.A. They wrote their outrage here, they wrote in the Los Angeles Times, the OC Register, anywhere they could get a hearing.

So I think Shawn deeply appreciates his fans (who may have been instrumental in getting format flipper extraodinare, Saul Levine, to bring Country and Parr back on the air in December 2006) and wrote them a message, a very personal one, that would appeal to them.

I think if I were a Shawn Parr fan I'd eat this message up. Since I'm not, by that I mean I neither like nor dislike him...I don't listen to his show, Shawn's message means nothing to me ("Wha...Oh..OK, sure Shawn. Whatever you say. You da man" [both thumbs up]).

You can and will read into Shawn's message what your will, bottom line is that it just doesn't matter in the greater scheme of the universe. I have stated previously on other threads that while he may not be the best morning man in LA he is also not the worst.

I do question the constant references to the format flipping tendencies of Saul Levine. The record for 105.1 is that is signed on in Feb of 1959 as KBCA playing jazz and switched calls in 1979, due to a court challenge by KABC, to KKGO still playing jazz. In 1989 when Classical KFAC changed formats the 105.1 signal picked up that format as KMZT. In Februaty of 2007 following the initial outing on AM 1260-540 it returned as KKGO playing Country Music. Does not seem to be a lot of flipping to me.

I do have questions about the policy for the co-owned AM station which has gone though frequent changes. I am not in Mr. Levine's shoes but it seems to me that in the recent past they did a good job with Adult Standards and Real Oldies. If it were me I would accept the fact that given the signal limitations of 1260 that it isn't ever going to be a market leader and it is after all AM. Pick as popular a format as possible and stick with it. I think that there might be a little buyers remorse over having purchased KGIL from Buckley and to boot he has invested in upgrading the transmitter plant to 20KW days and 7.5 night. Also the phantom tower has been replaced with an actual antenna for the 4 tower directional array.

It remains to be seen if the current News/Talk incarnation will stick any better than the past trials.

Thanks for the advice. Got any more?

Here's some for you: Give up on the smear campaign against Shawn.

No one here idolizes anyone, works at the station, or is him. Maybe I just like country radio--ever thought of that?

OK. Your couple of posts will be waiting here for you if you want to return.

The one thing that stands out in this letter for me is this:
As you can see Country music is alive and well in the Southland and it’s all because of you.

It is funny how in e-mail blast such as this, at performances where the talent etc are locked away etc the fans... HIS fans are thanked and recognized that it is "all because of you" that country is back in LA and the OC and yet when doing interviews with celebrities it isn't about what the fans did, it is about HIM, what HE did.
As a matter of fact, in an interview with Garth Brooks, Garth thanked Shawn for bringing country music back to LA... Shawn said, "You gotta do what you gotta do" or something to that effect... NOT ONCE did he say if it weren't for the response of the country music fans their ribbon campaign, their letters, e-mails and phone calls... the FANS were not mentioned only a "Your Welcome" type response as if he was the one who did this.
I send out a THANK YOU to SAUL LEVINE for hearing the cries of the fans begging for someone, anyone to let us hear country music again and he did it, first with 540AM, than 1260AM and then 105.1FM, to the former countryboards.com member that posted the contact information for Saul and told people to keep writing and e-mailing him about a possible flip (this less than a month after KZLA went off the air) to other radio personalities NOT currently on KKGO but that were on KZLA that encouraged the MANY fans to not give up, to keep heading toward the goal... AND to those MANY fans who kept fighting even when people said it couldn't be done, people said it was impossible and called them whiners for wanting FM country...

I don't follow what Shawn Parr does so his agenda for the coming year is not of interest to me, but there are those that may want to know these things so if God blessed him with being back in country radio (probably had nothing to do with the fans praying that ALL of the DJ's from KZLA would be back at work on the air at a new country station) More power to him for giving God the Glory for what he has... lets just hope the next time he does an interview... perhaps in front of Dolly at the FM celebration Shawn will acknowledge the fans and let the artists know it isn't because of ONLY what HE did but what many others did as well that is the reason Country Music is back in LA...

BUT I did not post this e-mail to "Bash" on Mr. Parr, I did it to share what was shared with me if anyone was interested in what was going on with him and the e-mail blast that he sent.

I heard the same interview and not once did I think Shawn was taking all the credit for getting country back on the radio in L.A.

The fans were already thanked and thanked and thanked some more. Enough is enough. Enjoy the music. The music is your thank you.

I'm not reading anything into Shawn's message. It is a typical message from a personality to his fans. And, yes, in messages of this nature it IS all about him. Fans of Shawn want to know what he's doing and, conversely, it gives Shawn a chance to promote whatever he's got scheduled, like his golf tournament.

The reason I'm no fan of Shawn Parr is that I don't listen to Country music. I don't like it. Nothing personal against him. However, I was very angry over the way Shawn was treated on his last show with KZLA. For a station to flip a format in the middle of an air personality's show, without his prior knowledge, just to retain a "captive" audience is nothing short of shabby. In fact, I refuse to listen to KMVN for just that reason. Hey, maybe I am a Shawn Parr booster.

As for Saul Levine, his format gymnastics are legendary. The only thing I can say about Saul is that, apparently, he treats his employees much better than the Mays family treats theirs. And in the radio industry that says a lot.

db

Fans out cries were not for just Shawn but for KZLA and the format. Many missed Whitney, Brian, Buzz and even Peter. The fans cried out for the country music family and never just about Shawn. A former KZLA employee started a chat site, and a girl helped guide the fans as to where to write and whom. The fans were the warriors. Brain Douglas and Peter Tilden were alos instrumental in getting country music back in Los Angeles.

Joking, or believing it, Shawn has said he has brought back country music before this post/email letter. Many have heard him on the air making that claim. I have seen him at concerts take the credit and never stating something like "it was the fans" when it's mentioned on a stage.

But to read things like "Concerts were sold out" gets me to wonder if they think that was KKGO doing. Several country concerts were promoted through KKGO, but also KFRG, KOST, and I even heard some on Star. If concerts sold out it was the fans and their love of that particular talent that did that.

Other talent write their email/posts to fans from a different angle. They do talk about what has happened in the last few months and thanking the fans for everything they have, then they talk about upcoming events that fans can participate in, record releases.. etc.. it's just not a LOOK WHAT I'VE DONE, I'm so great..... angle.

Actually, I am wondering why this much time is given to this guy. There are better people to talk about and much better topics.

I guess I have to question for what purpose Mt. Wilson purchased KGIL. It was originally licensed to the city of San Fernando and as a 5KW station adequately fulfilled that purpose. Now Saul Levine has put in a higher power transmitter, replaced the old wire hanging between the original two actual towers. I think the old KGIL-FM tower is the fourth of the directional array they now use. SO there has been a considerable cash outlay (to borrow a simile) to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. The problem is that he still has a marginal signal on the AM band in a market with so many receivable signals.

The record of 105.1 still does not to me show a lot of flipping, three music formats since 1959. Not too many other signals in LA can boast of that longevity.

The Mays family I believe expanded too much and now are faced with trying to make a profit on a widespread broadcast empire that may be unmanageable in their eyes. I would not be surprised to see a lot more stations sold off after the going private transaction dust has settled. In any event Charlie Tuna was given the chance at a dignified goodbye where Shawn was not. So Emmis takes the prize in how not to fire a personality and a format at the same time.

I do like country music though I have enjoyed and still do many other genres of music. Now though the most of the music played on the other stations here in LA has so alienated me that I am drawn more to country. The oldies on KRTH are too limited and I would prefer KOLA if I could get it in the Valley.

Good oldies stations online: http://www.oldies1160.com/ or http://www.richbroradio.com/main.html This is what I want an oldies station to be. Until then KKGO is my radio home when my computer is not at hand and often when it is.

I was primarily referring to Levine's AM stations. These have been the most problematic for Mt. Wilson and have gone through the most changes.

Last I checked, Clear Channel was down to about 680 stations, an amazing reduction from 1200. While they may sell off more, no one seems to understand why they just recently paid top dollar for an FM in Pollock Pines which is about 45 miles east of Sacramento.

I also enjoy Oldies and especially Rich Bro Robbin's web radio stream. A nice mix of the familiar and obscure. Much better than KRTH. I'll check out Oldies 1160. Thanks for the link.

ceejay, Thanks for pointing out all the thank yous that Shawn expressed to the fans.
I saw them when I read the e-mail blast, which was why I mentioned this "hidden" thank yous... not said in front of country artists etc... the reason I read comments from artists on Shawn's Myspace thanking HIM for bringing country music back etc.

I grew up listening to Rich 'Brother Robbin' when he, Charlie Tuna, 'Shotgun' Tom Kelly and Charlie Van Dyke worked at various radio stations in San Diego, most notably KCBQ and KGB-FM, as both of those stations could easily be heard deep into LA County.

Thanks for the link.

I do wish that Clear Channel would have also allowed Kim Amidon and Mike Sakallereides to sign off KOST as Tuna was allowed to do at KBIG' KOST is unquestionably among the top five properties in Clear Channel's portfolio, and unquestionably the most prestigious AC station in America.

Well..... I have a couple of issues with this guy myself, so, I tend to bend over backwards in making sure I am not being unfairly critical of him.

I also did not intend to offend you. If I did so, I apologize.

Never been to his myspace...... you got a link?

No worries on what you wrote, I was not offended in any way.
I understood how others who may have read the letter may not be aware of much of the Shawn Parr History...

The comment on his myspace can only be viewed by people registered on Myspace because it is not on the first page ... it is from August 14th 2007 and it is from the Christian Simmons Fans Myspace and Hurricane Jeanne
The quote on his myspace...
"Hi Shawn,Thanks for bringing Country Music back to La.Glad to have you back.We hope that you will feature your friend and ours, Christian Simmons ."

The link to the main page of his myspace is:

Who the f*** is Shawn Parr? Been there done that. Worked COuntry in the bigs
when it had something to say. Now its suburban housewives soap opera music to
a dry humped 50's beat. None of these posers could walk the same street as
Keith, ETC, Waylon, etc.
