SHE plays everything?

I've listened some. I've seen their large advertisement in the paper. I hear a lot of mostly A.C. hits by and for white people. There isn't a single black or Hispanic artist in their ad. Or, mostly, on their air. There really isn't anything there that you can't hear in many other places. In fact, they just played the worst song ever: "Beth" by Kiss. The new slogan should be: "SHE plays everything, if you're non-Hispanic white". Sounds like a perfect format... for North Dakota. How much longer until the next flip?

Isn't WSHE a ROCK station? Were you expecting Usher or PitBull in the rotation? :D

It's just a format, Variety Hits....they don't really play everything. Just everything that was like pop or rock hits from the 70s to now. However...you will hear Salt N Pepa sometime soon!

John, I don't want to fight with you. You're technically right, but you are cherry picking. At this moment, here's the last 10 songs. Right now, no cherry picking. The point, without mining individual aberrations, is that this is more of the same music that us non Hispanic whites can get everywhere else. This station will have virtually no Hispanic or African American listeners in a market that is increasingly so. Blacks are not listening to Slash (half black) or Darius Rucker. Timbaland? Maybe, but they aren't sitting through "Rock Lobster" waiting for him.

Granted, but some of us would. It depends on your taste. I, personally, like this format so much that I very rarely have the radio off or on a different station. Literally, I can listen to it all day and all night and not get bored. The only time I change the station is on weekends because I like 97.3 The Coast's Retro Weekend and listening to Gnarly Charlie.

Others? Well some of them don't like this mix...so they'll listen to something else. But with you know, 20 different FM stations in the area (or more) I'm sure we'll each have our favorites.

An advertising slogan, such as "We play everything," shouldn't be taken literally. They don't play Beethoven. You won't hear bagpipe music either. And Gregorian chants are in very slow rotation.

Yes, most of Miami's FM stations are either aimed at a multi-racial audience (WLYF, WHYI), Spanish-speaking Latin listeners (WAMR, WXDJ), African-Americans (WHQT, WEDR) or young American-born Latins, African-Americans and white listeners (WPOW).

But there are still a few stations aimed primarily at white listeners... WKIS, WBGG, WMXJ and now WSHE. Maybe it doesn't make much sense, given the market's demographic trends. I've written a post a few months ago remarking that Miami has six or seven Spanish-language talk stations on the AM dial but only one, WIOD, is still doing talk in English. It wasn't that long ago that Miami supported numerous AM talk stations and even an All-News station, WINZ. (If you watch the music video for Smuggler's Blues by Glenn Frey of the Eagles, the video ends with a reporter from 940 WINZ doing a story on the crime Glenn Frey's character just committed.)

So it's no surprise that a station that claims to play everything doesn't. It may be a bit of a surprise in this day and age that a station in Miami would flip from a Spanish-language format to not just one in English but one aimed almost exclusively at white listeners. But I'm sure Clear Channel didn't make the switch without thinking.

I'm not a big fan of Variety Hits. It works in some markets, not in others. Let's remember, Miami and NYC are the only two large markets with no Contemporary or Alternative Rock station. Variety Hits or Jack is mostly 80s and 90s Rock Hits with one or two out-of-format songs each hour (sometimes by African-American artists) thrown in for variety. It's basically a rock format and I doubt Miami will like it much. But it's cheap to do (no DJs or much promotion) so maybe Clear Channel figures it will give it a try and see what happens.

Using WBGG as an example, on average, about a third of its audience is Hispanic and a third of them are "Spanish dominant" listeners. All through Latin America, from "Rock & Pop" in Argentina to "Alfa Rock" in San Juan to Alfa in Mexico City there are stations playing a lot if not all music from the harder side of English language rock.

With 900+ songs on the playlist, this is a very different station for CC. Looking at the playlist, I would say it would be the station to target those who watched the original MTV. A little Bob Pittman influence...maybe.

For those who complain about stations with little variety. They should be happy.

And yes...this is not the original She, different time, different era, different music.

I do not believe I have heard any on Classical South Florida.
Have to look for this show from one of my favorite XM guys.

Is WSHE cannibalizing audience away from WBGG?

No, I mean guys...it must be because I'm from a Different market having worked in a Variety Hits station......all it is, is a little of everything. It's more niche than anything. Most She listeners will be people who prefer ipods and such or that don't want to skip around on channels

Big will always have it's classic rock following, MIA will always have it's Dance following and so on......She will have it's OWN following and from time to time, those who follow the other stations will flip it on and off. But you've got to remember, it's not just Classic Rock, It's not just the 80s, It's not just dance, It's not just GEN X........it's everything from those eras.

I have to imagine most classic rock fans won't be interested in hearing "walk the dinosaur"...however I do! ;)

From the looks of their playlist, SHE plays almost everything.

I've never heard WSHE back in the day, but from what I can tell, CC wanted to bring the heritage branding back to MIA because Super X sucked. I think they wanted to try something other than Spanish language radio. Because, hey, it's all been done before.

pbf1 writes >>>Probably not many, other than perhaps "Sadness (Part 1)" by Enigma!<<<

Ha! Exactly what I was thinking. I didn't want to say WSHE plays no Gregorian chants, since I figured this song is probably in slow rotation. It was an Alternative hit in the 90s, so I figure WSHE probably plays it once in a while.

But since Miami wasn't much of a market for Alternative in the 90s as LA (KROQ) and San Diego (91X) were, I don't see WSHE succeeding. Unless there's an untapped pool of Latin listeners who were grooving to Def Lepperd and Depeche Mode while growing up back in Quito or Managua, I don't think there's enough of a white audience into this music to make it a success.

As it is, the three FM stations running formats aimed mostly at white listeners are all out of the top 10: Classic Rock WBGG (#12 tie), Country WKIS (#16 tie) and Oldies/Classic Hits WMXJ (#16 tie).

DJ'ed at a goth, industrial and alternative club in Broward for 7 years in 90's. Every night I was there it was at least 60% latin and Depeche Mode was a favorite request.
