She quit on the air.

Times once were that even the smallest stations had to hire overnight jocks or go off the air, or use really bad sounding analog automation systems that used to frequently screw up when no one was there...

Even if you had automation, you still needed to have a licensed employee there, as the phone transmitter controls hadn't been invented yet. But I do remember those clunky tape-based automation systems. They'd occasionally misfire and not stop on the tones, or two events would be triggered simultaneously, creating a crosstalk mix-mess. Usually it was the FM, while the jock did the live shift on the AM.

Why do I have Mixed feelings?

because, on one hand.... the radio jock in me who's felt like that before totally agrees with her and says "More power to ya girl".

the seirous side of me says, "Gezz, she's a ticking time bomb"

I've got mixed feelings about what she did.

On one hand, it was very unprofessional and not very classy at all. It could've probably been handled in a much better way.

However, I have a feeling she already tried to bring it up and was met with a brick wall. You go Inetta!!

Why mixed feelings? If she was really that unhappy, why not just give notice and leave without making a scene? What did she accomplish by this except make herself look unprofessional?

When is management EVER professional? They lie to jocks about EVERYTHING.

I visit this board because I like radio and the media along with the behind the scenes stuff. I was so interested I applied to Communications school and got in, but had to put it off for financial reasons. In the time I put it off, a friend of mine was in the school, and started interning at various station. He had (and still has) a love for radio, but I was told so many stories that I wouldn't be able to deal with. Just the crappy way interns are treated, and then the crappy way you yourself are treated when you are a permanent employee. And you are on air DJ'ing for the masses while making the 6 bucks an hour. That's disgusting. So I'm glad I didn't end up going to school at all for it.

But I'd still love to work in the media somehow.

You just haven't been at the right station. They're not all like that. There are some jocks that deserve to be lied to about everything, because all they do is complain. It's all about ME, ME, ME. Try asking some of them to do something extra to benefit something other than themselves, and most of them won't do it. There's give and take in every profession.

That is easily the most twisted philosophy I have ever heard. If a jock "complains" you are justified to lie to him/her about salary/benefits/remotes, etc? That is beyond evil. People make drastic changes in their lives and move across this country...but it is OK to completely screw them over if they "complain"? It's OK, you will get yours. Karma is real.

I don't think that's what he was trying to say. My guess is that he was trying to point out that there are jerks on both sides of the mic. I've worked with plenty of minimally talented jocks who had bigger egoes than Howard Stern....showing up for work on time/following the format/people skills, etc. were merely suggestions for someone of their talent. The days are long gone where jocks move cross-country for gigs unless they're major-market talent.

Broadcasting has always been an industry that treated its employees like dirt...just as true (if not more so) of the small-time owners as of the corporate ones. People are just less willing to put up with it today than they were in the past.

I've mvoed from Connecticut to Mississippi, Connecticut to Florida, FLorida to North Dakota and North Dakota to New Hampshire for work.

I've logged about 8000+ miles "cross country" for jobs. I do it because I love it, nuff said.

Jocks move across the country ALL the time. Most are not moving to major-markets.
