Sheridan Broadcasting Sells WAMO to Religious Organization

That being said, you can Google "Saint Joseph Missions" and find they've been buying radio stations for some time now. They were working on a deal last summer.

Really? I have now done that twice and came up with nothing of the sort. Lots of schools and hospitals, no radio stations. What other stations did they buy? What deal were they working on last summer?

What about a non-commercial outlet?

As much as I also like the idea, chances of that happening are slim to none.

At the same time, I also thought about the chance that it would continue on HD2 or HD3, but I don't see that happening either.

this story is fascinating on so many levels.

Apparently the deal was hastily done, under a cone of silence, for what appears to be a
fire sale price. That would certainly tend to confirm that, denials aside, the owners were
in very severe financial distress. Likely they aren't the only ones, and we are almost certain to see
more of these shockers from much larger ownership groups who are likewise in denial. (think 50kW Heritage station flipping suddenly to the hands of an unlikely owner)

Secondly, it certainly seems to challenge the Obama administration's clear intent to push for more diversity in ownership. That may indicate that doing so may be much more difficult than they think given the current economy. (it is one thing to identify prospective minority owners, it is another for those people to be capitalized well enough to actually run a station) If a long-established company
like Sheraden with professionals who know the business couldn't do it, you have to wonder about the prospects for any newbies.

It makes me wonder if the buyer was CC or someone else would the FCC be inclined to nix the
deal. In this case though, I have to wonder if they really want to pick such a battle with the Catholic Church. (with Hispanics making up a large and growing sector of the Catholic flock, such arguments could get quite interesting indeed).

And yes, the shutdown of Catholic programming on WZUM was done stealthily, and to my knowledge the Church or local Diocese has never addressed it. Clearly this is something that from their perspective has been in the works for some time.

In thinking about potential outcomes, one possibility that occurs to me is that they may approach the Mouse about flipping the ESPN sports programming to FM, has been done in many other markets. Then they can retain the Catholic programming on either 860 or 1250, and try to sell the other to some minority owner.

Pittsburgh has I think has 4 college stations with decent signals in the city. WDUQ plays all jazz last time I checked. I remember that Syracuse had no Urban station in the Sixties ( when Motown was really hot) and the Univ. of Syracuse station had "soul" music blocks. A university station in Petersburg Va. programs like a commercial hip-hop, soul, jazz station as Richmond has no commercial jazz outlet ( There are competing Urban outlets however). Non-com WMNF in Tampa has Urban focused shows( before CC flipped Hot AC 95.7 to Urban) and still does. CBS in Tampa, as noted, runs a very successful Churban on a limited signal. I don't see why there aren't possibilities to still serve this demo.

Ok, my bad, I didn't look closely enough. it was an application, not a purchase. It's in Ligonier.

And that's apparently the only one. The adress of Saint Joseph Missions is listed as

151 PENNS GROVE LANE
LATROBE PA 15650

No more gargage like Soulja Boy,Boon-Keyshia Cole,The Dream and Jerimiah. This type of trash shouldn't get radio play anyway.

You know the format is not for everyone, I love hip hop and don't like some other formats in radio but I respect them because every one is different and likes different things. Do I expect a 50-year old to listen to hip-hop no, I expect them to listen to AC or Oldies, do I like AC or Oldies....no I don't, but I respect it and don't trash it. So if this is trash to you just don't listen...there is other stations on the dial.

It is very sad to see WAMO go and leave no hip hop format in Pittsburg, but someone will quickly jump on this format quick. What major market does not have a hip hop station?

My ancestory is that of Quakers, so let me first get this obligitory statement off my chest-

THIS IS THE GREATEST DAY EVER! THE WORD OF THE LORD WILL BE HEARD INSTEAD OF GANGSTA RAP! GOOD HAS DEFEATED EVIL! THIS IS BEST FOR THE COMMUNITY- WHAT IS BEST FOR THE HUMAN RACE!

I feel like Elaine after Puddy switched all the stations in her car to Christian radio and she found out he was religious. Ha.

As a non-pro - I don't think Kiss or B 94 will change a bit, unless there's a huge shift in the music industry and the top 40 gets (to be blunt) whiter. It would be interesting to compare the Billboard top 40 and R & B charts from the 80s or 90s and now.

But here's my request...92.9, YOUR HOME FOR CLASSIC R & B AND SOUL. I was forced to listen to 92.9 for a stretch (as opposed to flipping around in the car) and God, is it awful.

Hip Hop has plummeted over the course of this decade from the third to the sixth most purchased genre of music, so it's entirely plausible that the format could start disappearing permamently from the airwaves of medium sized markets like Pittsburgh.

A whole lot of sad faces over a whole lot of good news. Go figger.

A little digging on my part, maily because I was bored and it seems that Saint Joseph Missions is a relatively new non profit, having just received non profit status in Feb of this year (http://www.taxexemptworld.com/organizations/latrobe-pa-pennsylvania.asp). I tried Googling the c/o name and what I came up with for Matthew J Gorsich is that someone by that name used to work for Allegheny Energy and Sesco. Mind you, I admit they could be different people, but that was all I could find on a quick googling. Others can pick up the ball and run with it if they wish.

St. Joseph Missions has been around awhile. They do a great deal of work in the most poverty stricken places on earth (literally), if it's the same organization. They do an awful lot with very little.
