Sheridan Broadcasting Sells WAMO to Religious Organization

Hey, I was from Altoona too, never watched SNL, but I did sit and watch Duggie Potter play the piano on tv. ;)

Sorry I can't really add to this thread because the WAMO sale doesn't really affect me; I've been out of WPA for years.

However, this comment is hilarious! I freakin' broke out laughing (at work!)

"I can't tell you how many times I've seen PSAs on stations- both radio and TV- that couldn't possibly be reaching a target demographic.

I remember when I would watch Saturday Night Live or maybe Star Trek, which came on at 11:30 p.m. on Saturday night or something where I lived at the time (Altoona area).

And in this time slot, effectively "The Late Show," you'd get PSAs warning five-year-olds on the dangers of handling products with the Mr. Yuk logo on it."

Anyway I just wanted to say that I too remember the "out of place" PSA's at night. BTW I'm from the Johnstown area, thank you!

Then you probably think Altoona is the big city and the bright lights.

You know, that has to be the most pessimistic reason I've ever heard.

A new ratings system is coming out. We're going to lose ratings. We know it. We just know it.

It's not pessimistic, it's realistic. Urban stations do much worse with PPM. One example of many is WGCI/Chicago. they were #1 or #2 for the past 25 years under the diary system, now they are #13 with PPM.

Urban's not the only casualty here. Smooth Jazz is on the verge of extinction as a format for the same reason.

Basically what the PPM has pointed out is that some formats tended to benefit from the diary system, where people would write down that they listened all day, and now the meter shows that wasn't true.

Yes, that's a horrible thing to say about smooth jazz listeners.

Actually it's more just an indictment of the paper diary system, where people agreed to do it but then didn't actually want to put in the little bit of time necaessary, so they just wrote down their favorite station all day long.

I was reading elsewhere that there are issues with the PPM as well...i.e. not keeping it with you all day, etc. Nothing is foolproof but I think to dump WAMO because they think something bad is going to happen just makes them sound like complete weenies.

Sheridan had second thoughts about Lynn Cullen, so they sold all the properties to get her gone. That is what my mother thinks.

She thought Comcast moving MSNBC to 183 was a plot to silence liberal talk, rather than a business decision.

Dont even compare WGCIs history to today's.. Because WGCI crumbled since they dumped Elroy Smith and brought in Kris Kelly from Detroit and they made her drop the #1 Local Morning show in the city for sleepy Urban AC Steve Harvey, mornings went from #4 to #18 on the station. Then they split up evenings, first letting go Mike Luv and then the Diz all together and started fresh, most all names on WGCI are new within the last year, and its not the same old station at all. so it cant be compared. It just happens that the PPM came out the same time the station was destroyed.
