Sherriff John's 91st birthday

I talked with Sheriff John Rovick by phone yesterday (Oct.2) his 91st birthday.
He sounded good and was very pleased with the birthday
wish. He said the folks at his assisted living facility were going to celebrate
with him at dinner last night and they had already sang "Put Another
Candle on Your Birthday Cake." Sheriff John lives in Boise, ID. I visited with him this past May.

I remember a remote broadcast Sheriff John did at Knott's Berry Farm. This was 1960. We lived in Whittier at the time and I begged my mom to drive me down to Knott's and let me see the show live. She did and I was able to watch him and the KTTV crew at work. After the show, my mom was standing in line getting a coffee and donut when a handkerchief fell out of her purse. John Rovick graciously walked over, picked it up and handed it to her. My mom was terribly embarrassed but I was blown away (my mom is 91 also, BTW).

Sheriff John Rovick was such a comforting, reassuring presence. And when I think about his show and all the other L.A. children's shows from that time, Skipper Frank, Walker Edmiston's, Paul Winchell's and Tom Hatton's shows, Engineer Bill (to name but a few), I really feel sorry for the Gen X, Y and beyond who missed out on the magic of live children's programming. We boomers had it good and didn't realize it.
