SHERWOOD SCHWARTZ DIES AT 94

As popular as The Brady Bunch was/is (the show is very dated today). In my opinion
Gilligan's Island was his masterpiece. You could remake it today and it would almost
be a carbon copy of the original.

I would agree re: GI. He claimed in an interview several years ago he wrote the theme song too.

If I remember reading the credits right, the theme was written by Schwartz and George Wyle, who was Flip Wilson's bandleader on his variety show, and also wrote the Christmas standard "It's The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year".

He also named the stranded ship the "S.S. Minnow" after then-FCC Chairman Newton N. Minow in retaliation for the latter's infamous "vast wasteland" speech from 1961. Ironic that Mr. Minow would end up outliving Mr. Schwartz.

That was almost inevitable, given that the castaways were stranded on an island far away from dated pop-culture references (for the most part). The "rescue" movies pointed out quite nicely how they had been isolated from pop culture for all those years.

The Bradys, meanwhile, were square, even for their time! Remember the episode when Marcia tried to recruit Davy Jones (of the Monkees) to perform at her prom? At least, she was still wearing mini-skirts long after they had gone out of style! ;D The Brady Bunch movies also nicely lampooned how out of touch with reality that they really were!

We should all be so lucky to live to be 94 years old, and Marcia Brady dressed just like all the girls at my high school were doing just not quite so short as hers! RIP Mr. Schwartz.
