Shine 96.7- Greenville

Hello everyone,

I want to make a statement regarding Shine 96.7 in the Greenville market. I personally love the music on the station, because they play a lot of stuff that's not found on WLFJ 89.3 or 106.9 WMIT. However, I do not like the voice over aspect of the station. It is like the station runs on auto-pilot. You can find all of the DJ's voices you hear live on other CC stations. I also do not like the way that the music just cuts out when they go to USC Gamecock games. I love the Gamecocks myself, but do not like when games come on with no warning whatsoever. Could this be why the station is suffering so bad in the ratings department?

I was discussing with someone the other day about radio. I have always loved radio ever since I was little. I remember getting to go on the air (for a few minutes doing weather and sports one day when I was visiting) at WLFJ when I was 12, and that has always stuck with me. Radio today is much different than it was back then. Radio back years ago used to be more personalized, and more localized. I know radio stations have to make money, and I also know that technology has changed, but do some of these stations have to go to total voice over tracking? It just frustrates me that radio has lost the luster that it once had. I used to love listening to the radio just to hear what the DJs had to say. Now, on some stations, you hear them saying the same thing multiple times in one day or during their shift on the air (most of it being voice over tracking).

Does anybody feel the same way I do, or am I just a lone voice out here?

I think you are right that radio is not as personable as it used to be and sadly much of that is due to corporately owned stations including Clear Channel.

I have sampled the station and have noticed that there is virtually no effort in to it. They go from a commercial break with a "Shine 96-7" liner crashed in to the beginning of a song quite frequently - not that great. I agree the VO and imaging is lacking. It sounds like it's being run out of a closet..oh, wait, it probably is.

96.7 has always been the red-headed step child of CC/Greenville. I am looking for format # 3 soon. I know the signal is good over the Greenville area, but it lacks in some areas, notably Spartanburg. They have never invested much money in this freq and likely never will. IMO, no matter what the music difference, they can not compete with WLFJ/His Radio or WMIT for many reasons. I'd imagine Buzzard had a little more effort put in to it though than Shine though....they managed around a 2 share, I think?

Have you ever listened to Hangar Radio in Spartanburg? They are on LPFM 104.1 in Spartanburg 89.3 HD and a lot of different translators. Their music looks similar, you may enjoy it too.

One of their translators, W289AN on 105.7 is located at the WELP-AM TX site in the Arial community near Easley. With 13 watts ERP, it has good coverage of Easley and the surrounding area.

Yeah...Hangar is pretty good, but their coverage of Easley is not so good. With all the hills and everything...it doesn't always come in clear. I do agree, though, their music is pretty favorable. I guess I might need to buy a HD radio to get 89.3 HD2.

I was listening for a few minutes this afternoon and they went from a song, started a liner, then in the middle of the song they cut in to the middle of another song. Why can't they get things down? 102.5, WESC and Whistle all sound fine with their automation. Did they have this problem when it was the Buzzard?
