Shine 96.7?

Good night, how much longer is Clear Channel going to let this station limp along? At the end of the year, it'll be 3 years since they flipped formats. The station has shown no growth. When it was rock, they averaged around a 2 share. Their music is nothing unique from 89.3 or 106.9.
The switch was because people "just weren't tuning in." Am I missing something now? Their logic makes no sense.

This could be a decent little station again, premium choice maybe? Some sort of Urban? Rock? Any ideas on how it could be put to use? I still think it has potential even if the signal is limited.
 
Take it talk, take it mono, bring all the Premiere talent over there & force WORD to consider their next move. Or *gulp*....oldies.

I don't think they would do oldies since WMYI plays a good bit of 70s/80s and that would risk taking them down out of the top 5.

WORD doesn't impress me. Not a fan of Gallagher or the afternoon show. Rush Radio 96.7? Would be interesting, but it'll probably never happen...even in mono, that signal would still likely have problems in S'bg county. It's good in Greenville and Pickens counties, and towards Spartanburg though.

Another idea....AAA? Nah.

I always thought WNCW pretty much covered that niche, but you may be on to something. Is 96.7 worth CC's time & energy? It could be dumped into the Aloha Trust & sold to a local individual who may have a desire to take it AAA....or sports talk? WCCP does not seem to penetrate well into the heart of the market, so why not?

Actually, WNCW doesn't get in to Greenville too well, at least for me. The translator at 97.3 is much better.

Greenville has a sports talk station at 1440 with ESPN, etc. WCCP is so firmly rooted in the Clemson area, I wonder if they really care about how well they get in the Greenville market? CC spends no time/energy on the station, it's all canned. I have always wondered if they'd eventually sell it.

I don't care if anything on there is local, just put something decent on there that isn't already covered for crying out loud. The only way 96.7 will ever work is with a niche format that can't be heard elsewhere.
 
I miss Charlie FM @ 106.3, they were great and did really well.
Maybe Talk radio at would work at 96.7, and west Spartanburg could get an FM booster on that same frequency.

I liked Charlie too. I guess there was more revenue potential seen in simulcasting the talk on a stronger FM signal though.

Knowing little about the engineering part of radio, would it be possible for 96.7 to upgrade their signal? I know they have to protect 96.5 to the north in A'vl and would probably have to move the tower site. Currently, they're a class A (like 103.3 and 103.9 but I think their signal is superior to both). I think CC has given up on Shine. They used to update the website with events, etc but it's a shell now.
 
Yeah for the city of Greenville, 96.7 is a pretty strong signal for 700 watts,
but it's city grade coverage extends out like only 15 miles max.
(I've been atop Caesars Head, looking at Greenville & Paris Mountain and 96.7 could barely come in).

I think 96.7 could move to the WOLT or WYRD tower in Greer,
while still protecting WLTY in Columbia & WOXL in Asheville.
They would lose potential listeners in Anderson County & maybe even Easley if they did that though.
I like the 106.3 signal location, it's right in between Spartanburg & Greenville and covers both cities very well.

Here's a scenario: maybe Clear Channel could sell 96.7 to Entercom, then we'd see the Talk format switch to 96.7
(in mono from the current WYRD tower) and the stronger 106.3 signal could play music once again (hopefully like Charlie),
but IMO Entercom already has too many properties in the Upstate. ;D
 
Entercom has 5 FM's...that's the maximum. There would be no reason for them to buy 96.7 because their FM's are all worth more and better than that.

Here's what I've thought of, it makes a lot of sense, but would never happen. Clear Channel gives BJU 96.7 and some cash in exchange for 94.5. 94.5 is a flame thrower and is, IMO, wasted with its current format. Bob Jones could continue the beautiful music format/WMUU on 96.7 and could probably get translators for some areas. CC could make something of 94.5. However, I doubt BJU is willing.

96.7 does well in Greenville, Golden strip, Easley, and Duncan/Wellford area that I know of. I live in Laurens county and get it on my boombox with just a little static but it can be sketchy in the car as you go south. CC runs it for probably nothing except for operating costs. I say dump a music format from premium choice on there, anything will do/be better than what they have now. Maybe they could find a 2 share again. Stick a translator in downtown Spartanburg, similar to what 98.1 did and it helps greatly.
