Shivvver me Timmmmmbers another pirate!

I really don't know him or his history, but it sounds like one of those guys I've met over the years... Hi..I'm from WXXX and I KNOW radio, and I'M going to show you LOCALS JUST HOW IT'S DONE...Of course without knowledge of the specific market they were in and all the local angles, most of them failed miserably...because this is NOT Chicago or New York or like most other markets...Guess we'll just have to wait and see... maybe even waste gas going out to the island just so we can hear their signal 1st hand, although they are streaming also.

Satisfying curiosity is never a waste of gas. :)

Is he on at 1700, or some other freq.?

With gas nearing $3.75.... it might just be a waste, in spite of curiosity...

It is a waste. I was on AMI, yesterday. 1700 is not on the air with any kind of a signal I could pick up. I was there around 10:30am.

I drive a taxi in the area, if a signal is on the air, I'll be able to go through the neighborhood to validate any "new" signals.

I thought I heard / read somewhere that it was located near the Bradenton Beach / Holmes Beach city line.. that would put it somewhere near the 2700 blk of Gulf Drive North....fairly narrow width of the island there...

Been there, tuned there. Nothing.

He may only be on the air when he wants to be. I'll try the next time I'm on AMI.

WAMi is in fact active. I drove down to Anna Maria Island mid-morning Saturday to do my part in wasting fuel, and as an excuse to eat at the Rod N Reel Pier Restaurant.

The signal range is puny and low on modulation. Surely he's Part 15 or close. The weakest trace of the signal is audible on Manatee Avenue (SR 64) at Village Green Parkway, as a near zero-beat carrier against the otherwise inaudible and presumed Miami station on 1700, guessing WAMi is the one very slightly off but impossible to confirm on a crappy Hyundai car radio. The signal is long-gone by the time one drives to the northern half of the island. In fact, signal seems to peak just south of the Manatee apex on Gulf Dr. N. (heading toward Bradenton Beach). I didn't bother DFing (too much traffic with events in progress) nor did I bother to call the listed number on the website.

Format was auto-pilot nonstop local musicians' soft vocals and blues, no announcements during my 2.5 hours on the island.

So there you go. Next one you want me to find?

Thank you.

Is it on 24 hours?

I finally got a chance today to drive by the house in Duplex City where 96.3/99.9 was transmitting from. The operation is obviously down. The ground plane antenna is completely gone, along with the top half of his two-part mast. Guy wires are gone. Coax is gone.

Pirates lose interest and/or move. Most were never in the business, either, which is why they are easy to spot because they are over modulated and bleeding all over the dial.

Well, I sure wish I had the knowledge, expertise and finances to at least try one for a while... even if I only had it on part time....and it was LEGAL... or well, maybe a bit ILLEGAL.....

It is not that expensive to put a radio station, "pirate" or not, on the air. All you need is roof access and a mast, antenna, cable, and transmitter, and a vision of what it will sound like.

It is time consuming to run and operate a radio station once it is on the air. It is why pirates come and go. Some are kids that grow up and move out. Remember, since they were living at home, they could buy small equipment to allow them to play.

People that run legitimate radio stations are committed to those listening. If they aren't, they are replaced by others that will. The radio station is mass appeal and serves the public interest. The balance point is still giving the illusion of being personal, one on one, by not alienating the rest of the people listening.

Pirates do not do any of that.

The biggest expense is going Legal, it is also time consuming. A legal station takes 10 years to go throught the process. Pirate operators won't wait that long.

Now you know why I don't pay attention to most of them.

I never understood crappy audio. Part of the fun was making things sound good. Not over-deviating and not next to, or on a channel in use.

You are getting too technical for them.
