Shock ! ! KZPS-HD2 is now playing Hard Rock !!

How long you you usually have to listen before you hear something out of the ordinary like that? I never time it right I guess to hear anything other the same ol' same ol'.

I notice (as I sit here listening) the audio sure sounds compressed. I had thought from the preliminary hype with "HD" any compression at all would be minimum.

In theory, yes. Unfortunately we're dealing with the fact that stations still want to be loud. I expect the loudness wars to continue, especially if HD takes off.

I put my Radio Shack "PRO" 25 headphones on to listen to some of that Iron Butterfly song. I noticed right away that the Bass level was too much, no matter which EQ preset I selected on the Accurian HD Radio. What HD radio really need is full Bass and Treble controls at the very least, to, adjust for so many HD stations "loudness".

I know I could solve this loudness problem with bigger/expensive headphones.

But.... when I listen to internet radio, CD/CDRs, and music from the hard drive...with those Pro 25's, I have --no problem-- adjusting the Bass level to something that is not bordering on distortion. So, with the Pro 25's working well with all of those sources.... then I would realistically expect that HD Radio would also work well. And, with that in mind, I would hope that HD Radio manufactures would give us full Bass and Treble control as a starting point, leading to direct EQ controls.

Getting stations to give up on "loudness" may take much longer.

Translation -

Jock goes to the restroom. Falls in toilet. Climbs back out.
Washes off with paper towels but decides not clean enough.
Decides to go home, take shower, grab a power nap, piece
of cold pizza and beer, and then heads back to studio, with
plenty of time still left in the outro..... ;D ;D

And as much as I hate to say it, that's probably going to be impossible.

Stations are utilizing multiband audio processing on their HD channels, similar to what they already use for their main analog signal. Chances are these HD audio processors don't have clippers, which will result in distored audio.
