Shocker! Randy Price out at WHDH

Nothing is shocking about it. Big salary, way-over ch.7's age limit anchor, down economy. It's happening everywhere. 7 is not immune. This is the station that let Harvey Leonard go and didn't blink once. The beat goes on...

There's a difference between shocking and surprising. NOT surprising coming from Ansin.

Ironic that Randy placed a early morning call to Leveille commuting home to Maine on Wed., to welcome Steve back.

Someone was just telling me about an anchor who he thought was in trouble --not Price-- who has a lot of years and was making a big check. So this type of change is not surprise. Good luck to Randy.

It's neither. It's just business. Their once very strong 11pm ratings in the 18-49 demo have been slipping steadily ever since Caterina the Ice Princess left. When the revenue starts dropping, you just don't sit around and watch the competition(Fox25) slowly eat into your numbers. You make moves. That's what they're doing.

Randy was the highest paid diva on their anchor staff and in Boston TV. He didn't warrant the money they were spending on him considering 7's slipping ratings. He became replaceable. They feel they can do better with younger anchors making a 1/3 of his salary.

Hi everyone,

Just let you know that Randy has agreed to a phone interview with me at about 4PM EST tomorrow that I will subsequently post on YouTube.

In a Boston media exclusive and his first broadcast interview, he has also agreed to take users’ questions - that’s where you come in!

There are two ways to get involved:

1. E-mail your question to [email protected] and include your name or a pseudonym
2. Leave your question in BTVN’s designated Randy thread (http://bostontvnews.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=whdhwlvi&thread=33&page=2)

Try if you can to make your questions things I’m not bound to ask - that way, there’s more chance you’ll be included!

Thanks!

I mean, don't send questions like "How are you feeling right now?" or "Do you think they got rid of you because they thought you were too old?", because, in one form or another, I'll obviously ask those. Try to make it something that you think I might not necessarily ask right off the bat. That's what I was trying to say. Apologies for any confusion.

Max, thanks for that interview.

RANDY PRICE WAS 100% CORRECT ABOUT EVERYTHING THAT HE SAID!
Where I live, there are 4 stations (2 of which I have worked for) that give local news. The one that wins the ratings every time also relies almost entirely on local news, and only uses network packages on weekends or when necessary. It just kills me to watch CNN and then see the same story by Jeanie Mose on 3 different stations 6 times a day. And then you have to sit through a career anchor who just woke up 5 minutes before the newscast try to ad-lib through and reveal that the whole world has seen the story already. That is what Randy was talking about. CNN and the 4 TV networks parcel out their packages for local affiliates to use as filler. That's fine if you want to show something cute once in a while at the end of a newscast. But in the last 5 years, some 20 minutes of a newscast is filled with national fluff, most of which I've seen already on CNN, NBC Nightly News, and MSNBC.com, Yahoo, AP, etc. You get the point.

Randy's upset because WHDH "7 News" which used to emphasize important local stories is now heading down that path of laziness, and viewers aren't stupid (especially in Boston). As I've been saying for a long time, flashy news headers and character graphics have never been the problem, and Boston has always had these (remember "4-Zilla?). 7 News did well when it focused on local news. But everything seems to be reverting back to the old days with WBZ on top, WCVB a close second, and the circle 7 fading fast.

It stinks that Randy's locked into a contract. You wonder if WBZ wouldn't jump at the chance to have Randy back. But my brain tells me Randy goes to another market (like San Fran or New York?). Just a thought...

Randy is a great anchor with jornalistic standards. It's no wonder he's leaving Channel 7. There's a reason that Channel 7 is third at 11:00 and that reason is not Randy Price.

On Howie's WRKO show yesterday, Randy gave a laundry list of factors why 7 might be third at 11 - weak NBC prime, 7's diminishing emphasis on local coverage(filling the air with accidents, fires, disasters, crime, etc from somewhere else in the country/world), more competition(4's and 5's emphasis on more local news, plus 25's entry into 11pm). He never once mentioned that maybe, just maybe, viewers are looking for something/someone different than him. Not picking on Randy or defending 7's decision to cut him loose, but like any TV diva he's got a huge ego which of course won't allow him to admit the fact he may be getting less popular as a local TV personality. Local TV news is a popularity contest, not a journalistic credibility exam. End of story. It's the nature of the business. It was bound to happen.
