Shocker! The Mayor is out at the Buzz!

According to Allaccess.com, 30 year market vet, Pete Kennedy has parted ways with The Buzz after failing to agree on a new contract.

I hope he lands on his feet. Pete always seemed like a pretty good guy!

They didn't quite get all the references off the website - including one for his blog right on the main page. Ooops. Looks like Entercom is in cost cutting mode, and mid-days are the target. So, syndication, or VT?

I am curious if this is the start of "thinning the herd" so-to-speak. Meaning will there be more radio veterans being shown the door as corporations continue to downsize?

Hey believe me I know first hand that broadcasting is about as stable as working at a horse and buggy factory. But one thing that always set Rochester apart from other markets was that if someone lost their job at one station, they could (most of the time) find work at another station.

Never had the pleasure to meet Pete Kennedy, but I wish him well.

Thirty years is an impressive tenure in any market. In Buffalo, Brian DeMay's programming position and airshift at Star 102.5 was eliminated by Entercom in January, but he landed on his feet as PD of WJBR Wilmington, Delaware. Wouldn't be surprised to hear that Entercom eliminated Kennedy's position in Rochester as well. Sadly, there's very likely more of this crap to come once Cumulus latches on to Citadel. $50 million in "synergies" doesn't just fall out of the sky. I wish Kennedy well.

Buffalo and Rochester are falling in market size. They're very definitely medium markets now, and the folks at corporate think that we should be pleased to get "major league talent" piped in for the mid-day shows.

You might as well resign yourself that even more stations will be live only in drive times. Even drive times won't be guaranteed as more Cumulus-Citadel deals venture into the next wave of consolidation. Clear Channel's got money problems. The new Cumudel will be owned by bankers, who won't be willing to wait for profits. They've been promised "synergies". That means cut, cut, cut.

Don't be surprised if a lot of radio vets who are earning good salaries end up on the streets. Syndicated morning shows haven't done well in Buffalo and Rochester, but don't be surprised if corporate dictates ignore that history.

Speaking of Entercom, I’m surprised to find no one here talking about this — which was tweeted yesterday by Rachel Barnhart of Channel 13:

What's going on at 98 PXY?
http://www.98pxy.com/Spezzano-and-Sandy-resignation-letters/7948998?pid=41374

She initially suspected a radio stunt — and I would tend to agree. But she later tweeted:

“Hearing 98 PXY is not exactly a stunt. Scott's staying, but the other two? One is leaving and the other might too. Tough business, we're in.”

Is Twitter the ‘new’ Radio-Info? ;)

There's a lot of weirdness floating around out there. Someone was circulating a phony "press release" a week or two ago claiming another morning host at a different Entercom station had quit. It's taking an ever larger grain of salt to deal with some of what comes through the in-box lately.

All the more reason for us to anxiously await NorthEast Radio Watch every Monday morning, Scott! :)

I try to be that grain of salt...but you should see what it does to my blood pressure! :D

The Spezzano & Sandy FB page sheds some more light on those "resignation letters": one is real and the other two are fake, and they'll announce Monday which is which. Sounds like it's Moose...

Entercom Rochester has a new (old) Ops. manager -Bob Barnett. He was there in the late 80's into the 90's. So changes are to be expected. He'll make the changes that suit him.

Indeed—and he’s a great guy and OM. I think most would agree that he’s largely responsible for building the Bee into the successful station that it is today. I enjoyed working for him in the mid-’90s and wish him well now that he’s back in Rochester.
