Shooter Shoots for Move-In/Upgrade

Gary Moss' country KMIL "105-1 Shooter FM" Cameron, TX, which rimshots the Killeen-Temple market has filed to move south to a site between Rockdale and Thorndale which, if approved, will rimshot Taylor in Williamson County near Austin. The Community of License is staying at Cameron, but the application shows an alternate method of community coverage.

It's possible that this is a setup for a future sale to someone like Cowboy Broadcasting Network which bought KRXT Rockdale earlier this year, although KMIL can't move much close to Austin because of first-adjacent KTXX Bee Cave (104.9).

What seems more certain is that this move south for KMIL will allow Moss through his M&M Broadcasters (Debtor-in-Possession) to upgrade the other end of the Shooter FM quasi-simulcast, which KRMX Bellmead (Waco) "104-9 Shooter FM".

If this KMIL is approved, and I would expect it will be, KRMX looks to be able to upgrade from a directional Class A to a nondirectional Class C3.

You can see the current and proposed maps for KMIL at https://fccdata.org/?lang=en&facid=84381.

Interestingly, Roy Henderson owned what is now KMIL 20 years ago and attempted to upgrade and move it to Thrall (in between Taylor and Thorndale) in 2007. That proposal was more aggressive and not approved, but you can see the coverage proposed here... https://fccdata.org/?lang=en&appid=d48d17e12c8143d0be93c1b6063ebeb7&facid=84381.

KRXT has never been a listenable signal outside of Milam County. I guess they were hoping that it would work if they bought it and moved it later. However, you are very likely right. KMIL has always had a good signal in Taylor, better than the FCC contour maps indicate.

KRXT isn't good in most of Williamson if you can get it at all. It's ok in Taylor, not great, but the buyer moved it to Taylor and they have signage on a newly renovated building at the corner of Main and 2nd. Very nice. I saw it last time I was through there but did not get a photo. Just down the street from the world famous Louis Mueller Barbecue.

KMIL is decent now and should get a lot better around Taylor with this move, which will disrupt Relevant Radio's co-channel K286CX (KIXL) in Round Rock.

Return 104.9 to Mexia where it belongs. Was much better off as a small town station, focused on Limestone and Freestone counties, than a constantly revolving door of Gary Moss format offerings.

Hey now, Ryan. Mexia has a large section o' this here redneck's extended family wandering around in it!

Take that 50 mile trip east on 84 soon, Ryan. Mexia is growing by leaps and bounds. You might be surprised.

What I was throwing against the wall was that the tower for the once KRQX still stands, and with KMIL proposing to get out of the way, 104.9 could go home with that C3 upgrade you previously mentioned.

But, sure. A true, community-focused, locally-programmed country music station that made a decent return for Matt and Lisa for a number of years in Mexia < an also-ran, Gary Moss-approved jukebox in Bear country.

If Mediafrog can dream up the sell of KFNC to the ERFET, then I see no reason why I can't pull a move back home to Mexia for 104.9 out of my hayseed keister, partner.

I used to live off Seventh and Main about 15 years ago. I drove through there a couple months ago and noticed how much the town has grown up. A lot of money poured into that town after I left including the building KRXT is in now. I used to go inside a lot of those buildings before they fixed them. They were pretty rough. Some of them collapsed.

Taylor once had KTAE, but it was sold and sold again and again. Dick Oppenheimer had KLGO (present KOKE-FM) with an office in Taylor until it was sold. Interesting as all three stations had studios or offices within a block of each other.

As I predicted in the original post above, the second shoe has dropped today. M&M has filed to upgrade country “Shooter FM” KRMX Bellmead from a class a to a c3. This takes the ERP from 6 kW to 25 kW from the same tower. There is a slight null to the southeast towards first-adjacent KKYS Bryan.
