Shootout Outside WTLR

So it takes a shooting outside a radio station to get State College back on CNN, just saw the story on the headlines...

I would expect this kinda behavior from a Froggy fan, but....WTLR? Maybe he couldn't handle the Bible thumpin' anymore... ???

There have been numerous stories about this in the CDT throughout the past several days. Here is one of them:

He apparently has some "message" that he wanted to broadcast. I know that all of the larger market stations and networks that I have been in always have a lot of security on site. Some of these facilities do not have any large signs outside. The number one reason for security and lack of signs is to prevent crazy people from trying to take control of the network and broadcast their "message".

Now I can argue that no person, no matter how messed up, would want to waste time using some local radio or tv station; although, as we see here, when you are crazy you don't think well. Obviously no local radio station here has it in the budget to pay for security, but perhaps some other steps could be taken. It's probably not necessary to give out the street address of your studio all the time. Use a post office box or better yet just air an email address for the contests. Contests are lame anyway. I listen to XM and I pay them. They don't need to give me any prize because they have entertaining programming. I enjoy not having to sit through stupid contests. But maybe Froggy should stop giving out the street address every time they read the birthdays. That's just helping all of the crazy folk memorize the location so that they know right where to go when they drop completely off the deep-end. Stick with email. If someone doesn't have email, your advertisers aren't targeting them.

Security and knowing a street address really aren't issues. Think about the radio guy who got shot dead in Denver some years back or the stage hand shot dead at the Today Show which has the best security you can arrange.

A minister quoted in one of the CDT items put it pretty well. Paraphrasing, he said when people get mad at God for whatever is troubling them, and they're unstable, they are likely to take out their anger on the people and institutions which claim to represent Him.

When someone (a) has severe mental problems and (b) is trained from birth to believe a higher being is watching and controlling his every move, and (c) things aren't working as the guy thinks they should, then (d) he tries to get even. We all have a touch of (b) and (c) but most of us don't have (a) and don't get to point (d.)

But I'm surprised attacks don't happen more often.
