Shortwave pirate stations

nd2023

Banned
How often do pirate stations broadcast on shortwave? What frequencies are they usually heard on? Have any NALs or NOUOs been issued to shortwave pirates?

I'm not interested in starting one, I just want to experience the thrill of DXing a pirate station from hundreds of miles away.

6925 is the most active frequency,,, but also 6900 6850 and 6955 amoung others.. Sometimes you can even catch one playing dance music.. Also,, you have to be patient, pirates can operate at any time of any day or night, but are most active on weekends around sunset..... On another note, pirates can operate at any frequency depending on the time of day, but most stick to the unused pirate bands to avoid getting and causing interference.. Nick check out a website called the FRN Vines.... It stands for Free Radio Network,,, almost anytime a pirate is on some DXer will log it just in time,, also Check out the website HF Underground.. On a side note,,, Go to shoutcast and type in The Gulch,, some old man hooks up his radio to shortwave and has it streaming live, he has a really good radio and he is real good about chasing the pirates up and down the band as he has some inside info on when and where they transmit.... ENJOY Nick... Its alot of fun to listen to,,, But ive tried doing SW and its just not as easy as FM and Internet,,, It requires a huge antenna and really high tech knowledge, unlike FM where you just plug it in,, hook up your exciter and Antenna,,, Duck Tape it to the roof and flip a switch..... What kind of radio do you have Nick?

They finally got a license. It's called WBCQ on 7415. LOL! All joking aside, I bet there's less SW pirates on the air these days... Radio ain't what it used to be.

But if anyone in the country starts a pirate station, it can be heard in the entire country. And the FCC will have a hard time tracking it down because it's hard to narrow down where it's broadcasting from, because it will take longer to locate it than it will be on the air. Then the next day, another pirate will go on the same frequency.
