Should 106.9 The Point flip or stay with their current '80s and other hits format?

I am wondering because sometimes the station plays some okay '90s hits, but the '80s stuff I can't get into. Should someone destroy this format that only a handful are listening for something like more Alternative that could potentially steal some if not all of WRAX's ratings?

There seems to be a running theme with my posts that always have the words "Alternative Rock" or "WRAX". I apologize for that but there isn't much to talk about Huntsville radio, which is so boring. That's a different story with Birmingham radio which is much more exciting. Too bad I can only pick up a couple or three if the weather is good.

The fact that the Point is around today is a major milestone. Sure, the ratings are halfway decent, but the 80s format is all but dead. You could probably count on one hand the number of 80s stations still out there. I would look for the Point to go Jack whenever Cox decides to pull the plug on it.
______________

You can count them on one hand, and all but one of them happens to be named Point and owned by Cox. I think they're slowly inching towards Variety Hits or at least a non-decade specific Hot AC, really, the playlist has grown broader over the past year or so.

I'd hate to see it Jacked up in the traditional manner because it has a good airstaff that shouldn't be replaced with Howard Cogan or a cheap imitation thereof.

Since there isn't really a hot/mainstream AC in Birmingham, why flip 106.9 to something completely different rather than simply tweaking it?

The only reason I would think that 106.9 would go Jack is because Cox has been trying to save a few bucks here and there, at least with their Atlanta properties. With the lack of live personalities, that's a few bucks the Cox sisters could add to their billions and climb the chart on the Forbes 400. A hot AC, otherwise, would be a cool idea.

I say it should flip, to something along the lines of Alternative, AAA, or Rock (like Rocket 95.1 in Huntsville)
______________

I'm not saying that they wouldn't do it, or that it's not a good idea, just that I'd hate to see anyone lose their job. Really, Variety Hits wouldn't be a major leap away from what they're doing now and would probably do quite well here.

That station we're always talking about may beat 106.9 to it, though, if what happened in Knoxville is any indication. If that happens, I think Greg's hopes would come to fruition.

Re: Should 106.9 The Point flip or stay with their current '80s and other hits format?

An AAA would be great here. THey would get great upper demos. Jack wouldn't be bad either. They would just have to add music from the 90's to now then that would be Jack. Call it Vulcan 106.9. That hasn't been used in a while.

Some Jack station do have airstaffs. Hopefully this would be one where they have a staff.

Just was in Birmingham last week/weekend and it was really nice.
I'd suggest you guys should note a couple of things:

1.) AAA - an almost dead format, with rough additional decent
music adds.

2.) HOT AC - just very tough and fragmented these days. The
magic formula has yet to be found. Plus, you have the waste
of space AC-war going between YSF and MJJ, so the pie would
be to hard to split and CHR is a tough sell, especially with
Urban as covered as it is.

3.) What does that leave??? You know.

Trust me, if it get's done right, you will be happy.
I think Birmingham will go crazy. Especially since The Point
has been steady, if nothing else, with the 80's.

Vulcan 106.9, "The New Place for Alternative Rock from the 70s through Today" or something like that. It would be really awesome especially for those who can't pick up Rocket 95.1. That would also help putting another rock station on the map in this country music saturated state Alabama.

Vulcan 106.9 sounds much better than 106.9 The Point since you have to say the word "point" twice which is kind of dumb if you think about it. Plus, it would sound much localize to Birmingham than that cookie-cutter sounding name they got now.

That would also help boost their ratings and give 100.5 WRAX a wake up call. Anyone out there in the Birmingham area, please make it happen. Former listeners of The X in northern Alabama would really thank you for it.

Here's a Thought...

Cox may be planning on moving 95.7 to 106.9 and vise versa.

RDP <><

P.S. Wouldn't it be cool if Cox were to bring Active Rock back to 97.3 and ditch that Country format, that isn't doing too well. I could see Active Rock having big time success, now that 97.3 is more powerful and has a real chance to compete in the B-Ham area market.

ugh, i pray that never happens, the last thing we need is another urban with a decent signal up here in huntsville such as that of 106.9
______________

I don't think any US Jack or clone thereof has on-air personalities outside of morning drive. Actually, the Vulcan name would be perfect if that other station Jacked up. They already have the perfect liner voice: Vulcan himself. :)

No, that'd make sense. It can't happen.

I wouldn't mind that so much. I am so sick of all the country stations around here. I'd like to see how many there are exactly. However, I do like the 80's format....sometimes...
I'd rather Cox just leave 106.9 and 95.7 alone and just flipping 97.3 to rock. Right now they would dominate with WRAX making that large sucking sound....
