Should Clear Channel buy KRBE?

I'm surprised the city of Galveston hasn't asked for it to be donated yet. Package it with KSTB and you've got a deal. ;D

I keep hearing rumors that KRBE might be bought by CC since Cumulus is trying to clear out of Houston. Should this happen?

Perhaps KPFT should take it over.

Old Chicago

I don't think KPFT has the money.

Perhaps the owners of KRBE can donate it to Pacifica (KPFT) and take one really huge tax write-off.

Or sell it to Univision, and Univision unloads 104.9 or 93.3 to Pacifica as a tax write-off. I could see that.

CC had to divest KHMX and KLOL because the Bain/Lee investment groups also had interest in Cumulus and Univision. With 97.5 and 103.7 no longer under Cumulus, how does that change the interpretation of the market cap rule in this case?
Could CC unload a couple of its AMs and be allowed to buy KRBE?

The Clear Channel investors are no longer involved in Cumulus. They were roughly 75% of Cumulus Media Partners, and Cumulus cashed out Cumulus Media Partners right before they did the Citadel deal. Of course, as typical with Cumulus, much of the deal involved stock. So, I suppose it could still count as an attributable interest in Cumulus, though I'm pretty sure they don't have any voting presence beyond that of a typical shareholder.

If I remember correctly, Clear Channel had to divest 2 of its signals (traded them to CBS radio) because Thomas H. Lee Partners own both Clear Channel and Univision. When they bought CC, it put them over the market cap in Houston. So, unless ownership has changed, neither CC or Univision could buy KRBE.

Thomas H. Lee Partners owned 25% of Cumulus Media Partners in addition to its shares of Univision and Clear Channel. Also, Bain was another 25% of Cumulus Media Partners. Both of those were factors in their settlement with the DOJ. With Cumulus Media Partners having been cashed out, it seems feasible that Clear Channel could buy another English-language station in the market, though the DOJ would still have the final say.

you mean RE enter the market.. they once owned 96.5 before selling to Nationwide in the early 90s

Does EMMIS own any CHR/Top 40 stations?

But if EMMIS where to reenter the market they would want more than 1 station.

Sorry Mega's Moniker belongs to CBS radio at the moment and so does Energy

I guess 104 KRBE would be rebranded back to Club 104 KRBE in that case!!!

Cox could sell 106.9 and 107.5 to Emmis and purchase 104.1 and flip it to the Eagle.
It could measure in the San Antonio PPM's east of I-10 over by Seguin to chip away from Clear Channel's KZEP 104.5 sister station to rival KKRW 93.7

Top of the Hour ID:
KRBE-FM Conroe
KHPT-FM Lake Jackson
The New 106.9 KRBE & 107.5 FM. Houston's Hit Music Station!

KGLK Houston
104.1 The Eagle, Houston's Classic Rock. More Power, and More Classic Rock starts now!

Why would KRBE have to revert back to Club 104?

EMMIS can't use Hot as it is being used on 95.7, nor can they use the Energy moniker it's on 95.7 HD-2. EMMIS would probably make it a Dance intensive Top 40 and Club 104 KRBE was Dance intensive 93Q was pop/rock intensive before the flip to Rock Hits (except during 6400, etc.)

It would be like Power 106.7 different form of CHR than Power 93 in San Antonio. The "Club" moniker would be back, not the same decade of music last heard while 104 KRBE was using the "Club" moniker.

I don't think they would use "The Beat" moniker, but could be likely as well.

I don't see why there would be a need to adopt a moniker, especially since its been over 20 years since KRBE dropped "Power". Unless thats how Emmis operates. KRBE attempted to adopt "Station" (Station 104 KRBE) as a moniker back in '99, but it didn't stick.

It seems a little silly to think that Cumulus would sell their stand-alone station to some outside company that would have to operate it as a stand-alone station.

Right, some other stations would have to be included in the deal. So Emmis would have to chip away at Cox, Clear Channel, or someone else.

Doesn't Emmis have its own share of financial concerns?

There is no obvious indication that Cumulus wants to sell KRBE. I think they wanted to hang on to all their Houston related properties, if possible. I remember the day the music died on 103.7. Internet radio listening is the way to go.
