Should DAVE go the way of JACK?

For those who don't read the other boards on this site, JACK is in reference to WCBS-FM in New York, which was a GREAT oldies station for over 30 years until CBS (then Infinity) radio threw out the format for this JACK-FM format (basically a "personal" mp3 player with NO personalities). Well, Jack will be put to death on Thursday at 1:01 PM, and the oldies format will come back to life at WCBS-FM.

With all that being said, anyone have an opinion about killing DAVE and trying to put an oldies format back in this market? Is CBS radio starting to come around? (Okay, maybe I went a little too far with that question...)

And, the final- and most important question...

HOW WILL THIS AFFECT Q100?

Oldies will do horribly, that's why Cox and CC abandoned it. The demo's aren't here for an oldies format.

Additionally, when an Oldies format pops up, usually you get the same 300 songs over and over and over again (see The River).

Lastly, before DAVE-FM makes any format change, the Falcons have to give an official blessing. Don't look for DAVE-FM to make any changes until after the Falcons win the Super Bowl.

Then it looks like Dave will change formats when the Falcons contract is bought out by a competitor.

Kill DAVE, bring in shock and rock. It’s time for O&A mornings in Atlanta.

Ladies & gentlemen, the obligatory O&A comment in a DAVE-centric thread! It was only (and always is) just a matter of time.

Ugh...let it go, people.

I'm with the guy who said a while back; Get XM and listen to O&A ALL DAY /EVERYDAY. Unedited... I've been listening since they were hired at XM.

You get live shows from 6am-11am... with replays at 3pm-midnight.

This is exactly why Cox and CC should have abondoned the format and the ratings weren't that good. While I love the oldies format I too got tired of hearing the same 300 songs over and over, year after year on both Fox 97 and Cool 105.7.

I thought The River was good for the first 2-3 days but then when you start hearing the same songs more than once a day, it gets boring. Last month I heard "Wild Thing" by the Troggs one morning on the way to work and then I heard it again that same afternoon on my way home from work. And BTW, The River is not oldies ... it's Classic Hits or in their case Classic Rock. They play NO Motown whatsoever.

The demos are definitely here in ATL for this type of format. It's just a matter of finding a PD who knows, loves and has a passion for the format to make it work. The right DJ's also make a big difference in the success of a format.

I say Kill DAVE. I may be 26 but I still want my Greatest Hits of the 60's, 70's & 80's!

What you're forgetting is that even if there's a demo for oldies here (which there isn't), it's a demo that is not attractive to advertisers. People over 50 are not what buyers want....unless it's possibly a talk format.

Something to consider, Cox flipped Fox to the Jamz format which performed much worse in the ratings than the oldies format. VIVA's ratings have dropped significantly too thanks to the CC cannibalism of El Patron. With the same 300 songs, The River will experience the same fate as Fox. The oldies format may work if it is done correctly. Maybe having 60's, 70's, and 80's themes to go with those decades of music and some syndicated programs such as Backtraxx USA, Reelin' In The Years, and Solid Gold Saturday Night. It would require some creativity and marketing though.

There are other formats missing from Atlanta radio as well that could work such as southern gospel, AAA (programmed better), or soft AC.

Dave is dead...but I suspect 99X will go first.

From what I understand, Dan Mason (the new CEO of CBS Radio) is going to go around market-by-market and assess the current situation of each station. When he gets around to Atlanta and sees Dave, he probably will pull the plug.

A lot of songs Dave plays also are heard on B98.5, so it might be logical to take WZGC to an upbeat AC to compete with B (if 99 doesn't get there first). They could bring back Z93 to compete with the River.

They could try oldies as well, and try to hire away Randy and Spiff from WGST. I doubt this, given the major problems CBS is going through right now.

There is a sizeable 50+ population in the Atlanta metro, although the median age is in the lower 30's. Oldies could and would work, if it were 60's, 70's, and 80's. I don't see 92.9 going oldies...or 97.1 for that matter.

Cumulus, which flipped WRQQ 97.1 in Nashville to oldies when Jack came to town there, might consider oldies on 99.7 (or more likely 100.5 with Q100 going to 99.7). They appear to have a better acceptance of oldies than the other companies serving Atlanta.

In the end, 92.9 and 99.7 will likely have new formats soon. One will be AC, but the other could be oldies.

Just take a look at what Mason did in New York. He killed FREE and went with a rock format and O&A in the morning, and it looks like another station will be flipped to oldies.

How's about re-launching Z93 as a 70s/80s/90s/today format and the return of Steve McCoy?

Vikki's leaving Star and from what I read a couple of weeks ago when the story broke, they were going to assess the morning show and decide whet they were going to do...

Now if you want to bring back somebody that was GOOD, bring back Randy Miller. It was the best morning show "Z" ever had.

Steve McCoy is an Atlanta legend.

Randy Miller was here, what, two years? Nobody outside Atlanta radio circles could tell you who he is. I know he went elsewhere and was successful, and good for him.

Steve McCoy is a brand name, has a ton of history here, once worked for WZGC (us 30- and 40-somethings listened to him on Z when it was the station in town), AND might just be available soon.
