Should I be so happy?

I'm a 2-year XM listener & I'my happy with them.

I just a Sirius radio 4 days ago & I'm also really happy with Sirius. I love the "artist'" channels right off the bat. I've only had 2 days & already I find it a great complement to XM.

Now that I have both, & in the light of the merger, I'm wondering if having both was a good move. Any thoughts.

Considering they merged, it's probably not a great move. Sirius will now combine and eliminate duplicate channels and eliminate the separate XM head end. They are very different services in terms of programming, playlists, etc. In the end, you'll probably see a flavor of both, but I am hedging you will see more of the Sirius side of how things are programmed. And you'll find it all on one receiver in both full packages, sports, and al la carte picks.

Does this mean I'll need another new radio? Both Sirius & XM say that my radio will continue to work even after the merger.

I can't imagine that all the XM receivers would be rendered useless, at least not without a very large class action lawsuit against them and the FCC for letting that happen. What an excellent way to piss off the majority of your subscribers. Especially considering that the receivers were all supposed to be interoperable anyway. Add to it that there are far more XM receivers in the market, and that the XM infrastructure is greater and higher quality.

Of course, I was routing against the merger...

don't understand the concern, no radio will ever become obsolete. if you want to pay for 2 subs nothing will change.

as i understand from reading orbitcast:

the first step is ala carte radios and pkgs so you if are a siri sub you can add a pkg of certain xm channels and vice-versa for xm subs. the ala carte pkg will cost less then the a full sub. that'll happen by fall.
then comes the interop radios so you could get either or both xm and siri on same radio. that's early 09.
the complete merger where there is actually one set of channels is some time off from my understanding.

i think they could do the last immediately if they wanted. all they gots to do is decide what channels they are keeping and upload those same channels to both sets of sats. but the other way allows them to make extra money while the roll out the interop equipment.
