Should I buy a station ?

Does anyone have an idea of what the multiples should be for buying a station in Northern new England. Do you think that radio is a good investment. I'm concerned that satelite monthly pay is going to destroy the business of free radio which is so pure and needed. Thoughts...

Fortysix, I don't say this to be cruel. Honestly. But if you think that satellite radio is the biggest threat to terrestrial radio, then you don't yet have an understanding of this business and where it's going.

I bet you're way smart... but you've got some homework to do before you put everything you have on the line.

Kudos to you for wanting to take the plunge into ownership! Just don't hurt yourself by diving into an empty pool, OK?

<But if you think that satellite radio is the biggest threat to terrestrial radio, then you don't yet have an understanding of this business and where it's going> Tru dat! Radio is the biggest threat to radio... Satellite radio is nothing more than the same crap utilizing a different delivery method. Honestly, can u point to anything that's truly done differently? But that said - there are local owners that are doing it right. I site Mark Osborne and Natalie Knox. WSNX is a great local radio station - all considered.

Where exactly are you thinking of buying?

While I don't have the financial resources to go into partnership with fortysix...I can only hope that if he gets his wish to own a radio station, he'll hire a staff who understands that radio isn't JUST A BUSINESS and a quick way to make a few bucks!

It's a way to communicate with listeners. Even the ones that don't necessarily fall into a "desired demographic?" ???

And that just doing what every consultant thinks is a sure-fire formula....DOESN'T NECESSARILY IT'S GONNA SUCCEED ? :p

But, like it or not, radio IS a business. If you don't have black ink at the bottom of your balance sheet, you're not gonna stay in business very long unless you have a bottomless trust fund you can draw on. The smaller the market, the more your business plan had better include automation. I think we all wish things were different, but we operate in the real world.

So is a seance, lots of luck making a living at that either.

Great!

Another sassy remark from oldbones!

And listeners continue to ask: "why do most radio stations sound so stale?" ???

....if you like living on ramen noodles and mcd's then it's a life for you, but you won't get rich from it unless you own a station (and even then you better have deep wallets), radio's a nice life until you realize there are jobs out there that pay more

Sometimes people can be happier with what they do being broke...
for example. when i dj for WWLR I am putting in at least 10 hours a week for my radio show's and duty's to be done at the station as well as being a full time student. WWLR is all volunteer work as well as when I was at WXCI. I sustain 3 jobs off the radio, one being full time and two part time jobs for the summer and will continue full time as a volunteer come the fall again focusing on schoolwork as well.

Jamie… Good for you. Real wealth ensues when you have the courage and strength to pursue your hears desires. Your hard knows you the best. That is how you experience real living.

Louie...

It's refreshing to find at least one or two people who are willing to think out of the box! This is the way creative radio programming ideas get past the let's discuss this further stage and on-the air! ;) BRAVO!

I always had to fight my way through that… and the ate me alive. But I never stopped… Anything worth doing is worth fighting for.

Thank you for your pros.

Big believer in local radio that celebrates the local community. It's what makes the medium great. As far as satellite goes you took it hook , line and sinker, Thanks. I love the passion.

Might need a mix of live local and automation to make the business work.... So,who's selling in NH and or Maine?

"As far as satellite goes you took it hook, line and sinker, Thanks. I love the passion."

So let me get this straight. You ask a non-serious question, and you expect the rest of us to answer it in good faith?

You need to go away and grow up. You would not believe the level of expertise that frequents this board to offer the next generation of broadcasters good advice. I think that's what Radio-Info had intended. You have violated that trust.

Please go back to your PlayStation and don't waste the time of those who wish to preserve and further this industry.
