Should MSNBC be renamed NBC News Plus?

NBC currently has a "Weather Plus" channel that's available as a second digital channel on NBC affiliates as well as some cable systems, and is complete with frequent local weather cut-ins.

Rather than sit around and do next to nothing on news or otherwise copy other channels' news formats, save perhaps for Keith Olbermann and Countdown, shouldn't MSNBC be renamed and reinvented as "NBC News Plus", with local news cut-ins once or twice each hour?

Might be a possibility, since Microsoft will sell the rest of it's portion of MSNBC TV to NBC Universal at the end of the year.

If such a partnership occurred with the local stations, It might be better to merge it with Weather Plus, since Weather Plus is a lot of repetition.

Or -- People don't think before they post

MSNBC.com is the portal for NBC News and Newsweek magazine. Therefore the MSNBC name stays.

When NBC actually considers a name change, than it will be worth discussion.
Otherwise, we might as well talk about what the sky would be like if it were red with poka-dots instead of blue; its a fake discussion about a something that is not being discussed anywhere by anyone

Supposedly, MSNBC was to be renamed "NBC News Channel" to 'compete' with FOX's "Fox News Channel"....good luck with that NBC...

Changing the name isn't going to make anything better as long as they keep most of the filler crap like recycled Datelines.

Its a change that wouldn't make sense. Everybody knows what MSNBC is. They know that if NBC news has a story, they can just go to MSNBC.com. It's like Burger King changing their name to "Salad King" because they make salads, or Pepsi chaning their name to "Cola Co." People identify with brand names.

The only reason why MSNBC to change names is if they were really really struggling to the point of going off the air or if their were some stigma or controversy attached to that name. I don't see that as the scenerio.

We are talking about something that is ficticious and out of the realm of reality.

I think NBC News Plus is an excellent name. MSNBC was always a dumb name and tended to dilute NBC's branding for the channel. Now that there is little or no "MS" involvement, I say dump it.

But there IS plenty of involvment from Microsoft... They provide the webspace and the technicle know how, as well as getting a nice little commercial out of it. Would you say that Candlestick shouldn't be called AT&T because AT&T isn't involved in Baseball? Of course not, its naming rights.

And in this piece, people know what MSNBC is. There's no need to fix what isn't broken... Yet.

I've always thought they should rename this channel. For years, "NBC Nightly News" was tops in the ratings, while MSNBC struggled. Finally, they are sharing more resources and personalities.

However, I don't see them changing it, because of the association with MSNBC.com - the website which is much more popular than the tv channel.

Why not? It worked with Tylenol and Alka-Seltzer. All in the image.

Ought to cure me from TV news for a long time.

Mother nature has recently looked into that idea to better reflect modern times, and the ever increasing amount of pollution in our world today...

Ok THAT I made up...

But on a more serious note, I do support the idea of *ONE* NBC plus name for everything applicible to it, so that when they remind everyone that "It's one click away" it'll all be easier to access.

One site. One name. NBC plus. For access to all the information on all the NBC plus stations. Good idea...

However, currently, isn't there already a very easy linking system in place for all that? If I want NBC plus weather for example, don't I just click on it from the MSNBC website already? and vice versa?

Or is it very true that it's much easier to increase the traffic of NBC websites by going ahead with *One* NBC plus?

Sometimes internet traffic really is more important than the name of the TV station.

When Microsoft sells Universal/NBC the rest of it's portion of the network, it may have no choice but to change the name. That may be part of the deal.

Why identify yourself with a company you're no longer doing business with?
If you intend on calling yourself NBC News Channel, you'd better produce a hell
of a lot more hard-news stories. Otherwise, you'll become a joke fast!

NBC has to decide what to do with MSNBC before they decide to rebrand it.

Your right. If isn't broken, there is no reason to fix it. As a side point, I believe the original definition for CNBC when it went on the air was the (C) Consumer (N) News and (B) Business (C) Channel.

That's what NBC claimed, but considering that CNBC was owned by NBC from the very begining, I always thought that was something of a double meaning, with CNBC really standing for "Cable NBC" since it was their first official Cable offering (not counting their previous interests in USA or A&E).
