of the VT killer? There is much hubris about the showing of the video and pics, but what about hosts that replay the audio of this nutcase's 'Manifesto'? What are the 'guidelines' in dealing with what media he left behind?

Just a thought....

I would air only snippets that show - at most - the obviously deranged state of mind of this guy. Radio really doesn't give much of a platform to a nutjob like this compared to TV and the front page of the newspaper. Visual images are what someone like the gunman thrived on.

Perhaps they're working under the common assumption that most listeners only tune in for a half-hour or so at a time, and that they've basically got a new audience every hour that didn't hear what the audience for the previous hour heard. So, they repeat things a lot.

I'm only suggesting that as a "perhaps", so I'd appreciate it if no went ballistic over that suggested reason.

he said he wouldnt air the audio...good for him.

On further reflection, I have to agree with you. It's best if radio talk show hosts do all they can to help America bury its collective head in the sand and ignore things like this. The sooner we can forget about this and get back to normal, the better. When radio informs people, and stirs their emotions, it results in blind patriotism and a sense of dedication and purpose and inspires people to work together. That's not what radio is for. Radio is for selling products.

Today, Hugh Hewitt also said that he wouldn't air the audio. He also mentioned that he is trying to avoid mentioning the murder's name as much as possible.

I'm not sure I agree, RR. If the situation had been that the killer did not mail the prepackaged 'multimedia manifesto', but it was discovered by others ( police, friends) then I might agree. But, it seems this little ****** wanted notoriety, right? Why play into his post mortem plans?

Why play into his post mortem plans?

Because he's dead. Even if one believes in an afterlife, I can't see worrying about whether or not something might or might not please the murderer, assuming he can listen to the radio from wherever he ended up. Most people I know who do believe in an afterlife aren't sure about what the radio reception is like in either of the alternate destinations.

The only consideration worth considering is what impact this might have on preventing or promoting future events like this one. How the dead murderer might or might not feel about it is totally irrelevant.

that's fair. Somehow it just irks me that we are playing into his hands, even if he is dead. It has been proven without a doubt that he was influenced by the media attention focused on the Columbine killers, he stated so as much in one of his 'diatribes'. Then there is the account of how he re-entered a classroom to shoot prone injured students, something he learned from the 'Trenchcoat Mafia'.

I also realize the importance of the story, and how it would have gotten out without TV and Radio help.

I'll admit, I wanted to hear what he had to say, then I was disgusted at myself for listening to it. ;)
