Should somebody tell KGOW...

...that they really shouldn't be hitting the day pattern early? I mean way too early, at 5:15 instead of 6:30 (this month; June's sunrise time was rounded off to 6:15). This has been going on for a while.

The Game's 50,000 watt daytime signal can do some real damage to a few of the full-time stations on 1560 like WMBH Joplin MO, WPAD Paducah KY and of course, WQEW New York. There are also some daytime stations with pre-sunrise authority in the eastern U.S. that may be getting slammed.

KGOW really needs to fix this before it goes from just a mention on a radio board to an official complaint from one or more of the stations that might be affected. By the way, when I've checked lately they're getting the switch to the nighttime facility right, at 8:30 this month (and it was that way in June as well).

Time to kick the lamptimer!

jd, knowing where you are located, is it possible that the effect of Alex is pushing KGOW's 19kW nighttime signal up your way, especially that early in the morning? I haven't noticed any difference in 1560 in the wee hours locally. It didn't sound like the blowtorch was on yesterday morning on the way into the office, as KGOW is quite scratchy up here on their nighttime pattern while daytime they are one of the stronger signals. I was too busy watching the weather this morning to even turn the radio on. The reason I ask is that I've noticed KGBC was quite a bit stronger when scanning in the early morning yesterday and Wednesday and they are typically non-existent with their 250 watts nighttime this far north of Galveston. Also noticed a better signal from KHCB, which typically is unlistenable up here even after the move to League City. Did you hear it power up at 5:15? If they are doing it, the folks in Daingerfield must be having fits. I'll keep an ear out for it tomorrow morning.

I can't say it doesn't have anything to do with the storm, but I can say that I've been noticing a favorable somewhat north-south path for a while now. There seems to have been a signal enhancement for some stations in Mexico, along with some Central Americans and even down to Colombia and Venezuela. I ID'd XITE "Radio Fiesta" from Tampico last night, quite easily since it was completely overriding WSB. But I haven't seen any enhancement of KGOW's nighttime signal and daytime is basically the same as usual.

Yes, at 5:14 actually, just like when I caught it Tuesday morning. I had been listening to Sporting News Radio on the nighttime signal for a few minutes when the switch was made. There was no mistaking the daytime 50kW when it came on.

The average sunrise times listed on the FCC site for KGOW (based on the daytime site location) don't match what I've been hearing. They're not even close.

I'm not aware of anything that would allow 1560 to operate in what are still nighttime hours with the daytime transmitter. KGOW's authorization is here: http://licensing.fcc.gov/prod/cdbs/pubacc/Auth_Files/1325314.pdf

There are no special operating conditions or restrictions in that authorization other than the two listed on page 6, which aren't relevant. I don't know if you're connected with the station, but if you know of special conditions about hours of operation with daytime power accompanying the license that you'd like to share, we'd like to see it.

I suspected the enhancement was due to the hurricane as KVNS/Brownsville was exceptionally strong up here Wednesday morning from 4 until just after sunrise. Now, KVNS is a regular during the overnight but there tends to be drop outs here and there. This wasn't the case Wednesday morning with KVNS absolutely booming into North Houston until just after sunrise. That, coupled with the enhancement of KHCB and KGBC, led me to believe that Alex was most likely the culprit. You heard it power up at a quarter after 5 and that obviously is a no-no as there is no authorization to do so as you referenced above. I'll be checking 1560 in the morning while in route to my ritual Saturday morning Shipley's fix.

It's hard for me to tell which transmitter site they're running because I live within the new nighttime pattern; unless I hear the carrier dump I wouldn't know they switched. The night signal used to sound kind of muddy, but lately the two seem evenly matched, processing wise. Although neither site is overly loud, compared to 740 or 610.

The following FCC sunrise times are in sync with what's being reported here.
June 5:15
July 5:30
All times above correspond to Central Standard Time (CST) (non-advanced)
Sooooo, those times above do not represent daylight savings time. Perhaps, KGOW is one hour early because the FCC time limits were read incorrectly.
Yeah, somebody should tell KGOW . . .
(Could they possible be that dumb?)

Apparently somebody at The Game got the heads up. The above post is from Friday; yesterday and today KGOW turned the 50,000 rig on at 6:30 AM, matching their July sunrise time.
