Should we officially sound the deathwatch for Cool?

Since Infinity flipped two of the 3 biggest oldies stations in the US this last Friday and CC having done the same, I think the bell will toll for 99.3. But the question is when? And to what? Is there anything direly lacking in SD that won't conflict with CC's other properties or could gain anything over Cool?

Can't think of anything really, but still I just don't see oldies sticking to 99.3. The Demos are too old.
______________

Remember, CC has to divest the Mexican-licensed facilities...

The question is more like, what will the new holders of the frequency do?
CCU has to face the fact that they can't spin off ALL off their frequencies to non-sequiters, so at least one or two of these will be in direct competition.

So the question then becomes, what would a competitor to CCU do?
Variety Hit alread exists, since an original Jack is in the market, so you can't go there. Rock? There's already a half dozen rock outlets in San Diego.
Rhythemic Oldies? But then what about Magic, which also must go.

My guess is, if they were going to spin off another station to a religious or spanish broadcaster, Kool would be the station to do it with. But at this point, it's hard to say.

So I think question is not "when," rather, "what the heck can they do?"

Since CCU has to get rid of it anyway, I can't see them spending any money on a new format.

the deathwatch for Cool?

Sadly, yes. CC has never put much into it, no investment in effort or marketing.
Not a good sighn.

Radio Disney?
Maybe Tammy-Faye 99.3...The Full Color Cool Hits of Tammy-Faye Bakker?

Not Radio Disney. I suspect that ABC may shortly divest itself of the radio group.

Why?
It's one of the divisions that is making money?
It's ABC TV that Disney has to worry about right now.

That rumor pops up every week or two, but none of the suspecters ever has any hard evidence that it will happen.

I hate rumors!
And I'm getting tired of the "hey, I heard so and so was going to be sold..." or "Say, I hear so and so is doing poorly," or "Station XZY is probably going to fire ...." or "Oldies is dying, just look at all the Jacks, blah blah blah..."

And there's never any evidence, just somebody trying to start something.
Sorry for my off topic rant (and I probably do it too without realizing it).

Well, in this case, the rumors seem to come from ABC executives being quoted out of context at Wall Street conferences by radio trade publications.

ABC may indeed be shopping its stations, but that doesn't mean that they're getting offers that they like and doing a deal. It's also entirely possible that said executives are saying things like that only to get Wall Street's attention.
______________

Uh, isn't that illegal?
I thougt it was illegal to spread false rumors about a division you own stake in just to get a higher market price?

I really hope that the posters to this post saw the humor I was attempting portray by saying by my making my facetious remark about Radio Disney and KOOL 99.3FM...

I'm frankly thinking that nobody picked up on it when I made my second suggestion that after 100.3 went to "Jack," that 99.3 might be "Tammy-Faye 99.3."

Back to the whiny engineers?

No.

Giving insider information is illegal.

Saying that radio is a "non-core asset" at an investment conference is not.
______________

Only offended for 2 minutes....

Apology accepted, though not needed. :)

I hereby dub this portion of this thread "Seinfeld" because it appears to be about nothing.

Both of you get lives, okay?

Radio Disney is a giant sucking hole in the corporate ledger. Talk about an un-salable demo - it exists solely to promote Disney products to pre-teens. Good marketing, but bad business plan.

Off topic, but IMHO ABC will do OK. TV is cyclical. ABC is programmed better and more consistantly than the other Big Two. (At least their reality shows don't involve watching someone gag down mealworms or some such.)
