Should we start a 96.7 death watch?

I don't know. They said the ratings for "The Buzzard" were bad, and people 'just weren't tuning in.' I don't know if they still feel that way, but if so, I doubt they will return the rock format. Nothing on that frequency will ever do anything really. CC puts little effort in to their stations. Holy cow the guy doing WMYI in the afternoons isn't even EMPLOYED by Clear Channel.

I'm still betting oldies or an all-syndicated news/talk format. Or maybe a 'hot' talk format. Any would work beautifully with USC Sports mixed in. Anything is better than what they are doing now

Not true. i googled him. he does afternoons and is pd at clear channel's krbb in wichita.
 
That's almost as bad as WCOS here in Columbia with Kix Leighton voice tracking their mid-days when we all know that he is live at WSSL.
 
I don't see anyone suggesting better talent than Kix Leighton on any of these stations. i think there are two schools of thought. there is better talent that is piped in, or there is mediocre to poor talent that is learning. you can blame cc but i would ask any station owner to tell us who their next big star is. raise your hand if you have a student of radio that is going to be great. i am sorry that this is off topic.
 
My gripe with the Columbia cluster of CC was that they canned a local talent in the name of Glen Garrett that had been at WCOS for nearly 30 years and he had a huge following there. I guess that they were just too cheap to keep great local talent on the air and now WWNU has him in the same time slot and he is live or least in the stuido talking live with pre-formatted music.
 
I agree freqdev, it has its upsides and downsides...Kix is a great talent, but like Lhsh said, they can local, LEGEND talent in place of piped-in DJs and shows in a lot of places to cut costs.

Look at WMYI...they canned local PD and afternoon host Greg McKinney in place of Lyman James, who by all means sounds like great talent and is very professional. IMO, WMYI sort of "lost it" after he left with their programming. Wasn't he (McKinney) at WSPA when it was 'Lite Rock 98.9' years ago?

When 96.7 flips, it will definately be all-voicetracked or syndicated. They won't invest in that signal.
 
I thought that Greg McKinney was at WSPA at one time too and had forgotten thathe had left there to go to WMYI. My biggest problem with CC is that they screw great local talent for outsiders that are voice tracked and 96.7 will more than likely either be voice tracked or just run off of the hard drive like they do Steve FM here in Columbia.
 
Understand that i am not defending clear channel and piped in announcers. i do believe that as much as we want to think that broadcast radio as an industry is as healthy as it was ten years ago, it is not. most stations no longer have live overnight announcers. some don't even bother to pre record announcements. radio is not developing new talent. i read almost daily where evening or mid day announcers have been let go in all chains and the production assistant or the morning show producer will take over the shift. you can bet that it is pre recorded. if i owned a business and had a lot of debt in addition to operating costs as well as trying to operate the business in a tough economy i would probably have to investigate ways to save money. the airlines are struggling and now nothing is complimentary and other services they once offered have disappeard. entercom, citadel and many of the companies are now laying people off. many like mr. garrett who probably have been at stations for years. if the new administration gets the economy back on it's feet maybe radio operators will take a chance on staffing up. i am not counting on it.

i agree that whatever clear channel does with 96.7 that it will be pre recorded and not live.
 
Oh, I agree with everything you say freq. I know you aren't defending them, you are stating the blunt facts. Actually, everybody else just about voicetracks now, I know CBS Radio does and they have a lot of big stations.

Was 96.7 voicetracked as The Buzzard? I keep thinking there were a couple of live people there...but I doubt there would be now. When they flip, they could very well have someone from down the hall (Lizz Ryals, Sue Meyers?) to voicetrack a shift or come over and do it. They did that with Kain Cameron between WALC and WXLY in Charleston a few years ago. Having talent from one station do a shift on both.
 
i have heard liz ryals on 96.7 and recorded announcements from sue meyers too. i guess that is what you would call down the hall for clear channel
 
oh....then they're using them right now. I think they were using Kix Layton at some point.
I had another idea for 96.7.... maybe a pop/rock-leaning CHR with Ryan Seacrest - wouldn't hurt. It may hurt WMYI more than oldies would, though. Just wish they would put this thing out of its misery, it is going nowhere
 
i think that 96.7 is getting as much attention as entercoms 1330 and 950. the engineers are the most important people on those stations.
 
lol, 1330/950 as I've said have to be one of the worst talk stations around. Sorry, but I just can't stomach the local programming...Sean Hannity and Coast to coast are about all I can stand and I never even listen to them.
 
Am I the one poster supossed to come on here and suggest the format flip to Dance,, like I do on alot of boards... Well, if so, I honestly dont know what 96.7 your talking about,, Is it the Columbia one,, I really only pay attention to the Myrtle Beach and somewhat to the Charleston market... If 96.7 covers a coastal Urban Area that has little if any format holes, than yes, they should try the Dance Format, but if this is some Rural Area station I dont think that at all,,, The small Carlina towns are just like other South and Midwestern Area's they are conservative and they like Country, Religious, and Classic Rock.... Although, they could go Minastream CHR even in a small town, if the area is depleted of having one to tune into,, if its the Columbia 96.7,, CHR would work on that signal. so I didnt read the whole thread, but the only 96.7 I know of is the one in Columbia,,, I know most recently it was a Jack Format, and years and years back it was a CHR/Urban,, but if this is the station, then Dance might work and get at least a 2.0,, better than what they do now... But I dont live in Carolina no more, and havent for about 10 yrs which was only for about 6 months, so I dont Know.

No...the 96.7 you are thinking about is WLTY/Steve FM (formerly Lite 96.7), which does well with its Variety Hits format. One of its sister stations is WNOK, so they wouldn't try any sort of CHR there if they even NEEDED to flip.

We are discussing Clear Channel's 96.7 WBZT-FM in Greenville that is carrying a low-rated Christian Contemporary format. WBZT was previously rock as 96.7 The Buzzard until last Christmas. I doubt dance will be there, lol. Very few of those are around, and I doubt Greenville would be a good place for it (uh oh, I may have given Entercom an idea - Pulse 106.3 anyone?). Dance is a larger-market format.

You know, the more I think about it, a CHR/90s-2000s Hot AC that is light on the rap like WQNQ would be a great option for 96.7. It could give B93 a little scare, but not be in direct competition with them. Would love to know what kinds of ideas are swirling around at CC/Greenville.
 
I was kinda joking around and toying with the idea... I honestly didnt know Greenville had a 96.7,,, but if any of you remember back in 91-92,, When Dance music was in the mainstream,,, Greenville had Power 93.3 WBBO,, it was a mainstream CHR with an Urban/Dance lean,,,, but with B-93.7 filling the CHR void, and Hot 98.1 filling the Hip Hop/Rhythmic void, I dont think any form of Dance could work in that market today... Columbia it might,, and Charleston Maybe,,, and if Myrtle beach wasnt so much of a ghost town in off season I think Dance might work there, and it once did with Power 98,, now Mix 97.7 which still plays a tiny bit of dance at times. Myrtle Beach just doesnt have enough indudtry to support permanet residents, and its just not far enough south to escape the cold winters,,, granted its much warmer than say Greenville, but it doesnt attract winter tourism like Florida and so fourth.. Ever been to Myrte Beach in January and February,, the highways are empty, the sidewalks are empty, and most stores and restaurants are closed down. Probably why Former CHR Wave 104 would lean AC in Winter, and CHR during the summer.
