Should WNCI go Boom?

Yeah it appears Chris Davis is out at WNCI - the website still shows him as "on air" but Justin Luvv from Throwback 105.3 is on air in his slot.

I know "Dave and Jimmy" are quite popular and a ratings maker for WNCI but I am surprised they have not outsourced mornings to Elvis Duran or another show - Legacy morning show hosts are no doubt a significant cost.

As Aretha Franklin said when asked what’s missing from music today, her answer was “talent”. IDK, but I’m 56 years old now and finally gave up on Top 40 around 2017-18. The songs out now just aren’t good, or you have artist doing songs that don’t actually sing. I can’t even get into some songs from the 2000s that I thought I liked anymore and have been listening to a lot of 60s music I never used to listen to. Maybe my taste changed because of my age. 🤷‍♂️

Consider that most of the artists in Top 40 are half your age. They're not aiming their music at you. They're singing about things in their lives and singing for people their age. The problem for radio is that most of those people don't use radio the way older people do. On the other hand, if you want older music, there's a lot of it on the radio.

IDK, but if the number are down are they really aiming their music at anyone?

It’s more melody than the lyrics. The music I like, mostly 80s, probably wouldn’t lyrically be relevantly to me now either, and most of those guys were the same age then as the one’s topping the charts now.

The last period of good top 40 songs I remember were a bunch of dance hits that hit the top 40 (at least airplay) around 2013-2015.

It's a lot more rhythmic. That's what's been driving a lot of the recent music. You'll find more of the melodic stuff in country radio. That relates to my earlier post about why WCOL has more listeners now than WNCI.

Artists today aren't making music for the radio. That ended in the 80s. That could explain why 80s music is so popular on the radio.

Artists today grew up with American Idol and the internet. That's who they're aiming at.
