SHOULD WNEW BE THE ROCK OF NYC ONCE AGAIN

With their continued horrible ratings, the dial saturated with urban formats, co-owned Jack on 101.1 doing bad and Free on 92.3 playing less rock and probably going all talk, wouldn't it be wise to flip WNEW to "Where Rock Lives" once again, this time with a more Active/Aggressive Rock attitude.

I doubt that will ever happen. I would support it on the basis that something is better than nothing... However if that were ever really a possibility IMO they would have just left Rock on 92.3 and started FreeFM on WNEW. If anything going forward, I think you would see Jack go rock first. (it already leans that way.)

That and active rock has not done well in the past decade or two when other stations have tried it. I'm sure it won't do worse than Jack FM or maybe even WNEW, but it's hardly the format stations are going to jump on in this market. I think we'll be more likely to see someone take on Lite FM head-to-head.

102.7 WNEW Where NY's Rock lives...again.

Yes, it is always better to split up a small pie than to have a pie (albeit a small one) all to myself.

How is Lite doing financially? I think the folks here are only looking at 12+ numbers, which are irrelevant.

1. I would bring back the Rock on 102.7 (heavily dayparted).
2. Lean Jack to AC/Variety (a lot less Rock than they have now).
3. Free-FM is a powder-keg. Adam Carolla is getting into hot water with something he may or may not have said. I don't see why CBS wants to deal with the Talk controversy crap day in and day out. They coulf take the pig to current Dance and seek the gay dollar. I'm sure there is plenty to be had in NYC.

It should be the WNEW Where Cutting Edge Dance Lives

Lite? I think they're the top billing station in the country.

Once again, "Cutting Edge Dance" is an ultra-niche format that would probably result in even worse ratings for 'NEW (You could though play newer dance music, as well as Alternative Rock, as part of a CHR/Pop format and perform well).

LTW is the top biller.

I looked up 2004 numbers. You are correct. As I stated in another post, I would move JAck to the AC/Variety.

KlassikKountry:

This topic has been discussed over, and over and over again.

New York can not support another Rock formatted radio station. That's why CBS Radio switched the former WXRK-Rock to Free-FM with the exception of rock on the weekends.

In 1996, WAXQ-1043 dropped Active Rock in favor of Classic and it paid off well for them. Q-1043 didn't have impressive numbers when they were a hard rocking station.

A all cutting edge station can pull a 2.0 rating in the dance music capital of the world. It would never pull higher then a 3.5 but yet can still be highly profitable and would be known through out the world as a trend setting station.

You *Can* program cutting-edge Rock music in this market as part of a broader format like CHR/Pop (something Z-100 did successfully in the early to middle '90s), but I agree that a stand-alone Rock station would have substantial ratings difficulties. The strategy Z-100 used a decade ago was what I'd characterize as programming a Rock station by *Stealth*, whereby everybody knew that they were formatted like an Alternative Rock station yet they continued to report in as a CHR/Pop station while keeping Pop acts like Mariah Carey and Madonna in active rotation.

I understand your point, but wouldn't it make sense to adopt a format that nobody else is doing instead of one that is all over the dial. The NYC dial is loaded with urban formats and no Real Rock, so why add another urban, when you can dig into the under served Rock audiance. You can lure more advertisers with a 2.0 Active Rock audiance than a 2.0 Urban with all the competition in that format. The Rock listener is out there, they could not just disappear or go west the last 10-20 years. As far as 92.3 flipping to FREE-FM, it was more of an Infinity nationwide move, rather than a ratings one. YSP in Philly had great ratings and they still flipped to FREE-FM, as some of the Popular Rock stations throughout the country which flipped to FREE. It seems the owners would like to have all their current Rockers to be some sort of Hot Talk.
