So today is Race's last day on the air and as PD for 105.7 The Hawk as he will be pursuing other business ventures in his life. First I applaud MRG for allowing him a farewell show (clearly a rarity in this business), and that they will be leaving on good terms as Race has decided to focus on the music industry and some other cool projects across the country.
That all being said, as some of you may or may not know, Race and I were the PD and APD/MD (respectively) for B98.5 (WBBO) from 2002-2005. He did PM Drive, I did nights. He was one of the very first people I met when I moved to NJ, and quickly became friends with which is what made us as a management team work so well. Contrary to what anyone thought about the original B98.5, that station was an institution in the first part of the 2000's of Ocean County with it's Beach Bashes, charity work, and involvement in the community. When Race landed at The Hawk, he eventually took those philosophies with him and it's evidenced with the Ocean of Love Billboard Radiothon continuing among other things.
He made my move to NJ comfortable, so much so that we actually lived in the same apartment complex "across the lawn" from each other...leading to many nights of "hazy" video watching and music listening. Needless to say, we were brothers.
Since then, we have always kept in touch and been great friends...come to think of it, that entire B98.5 staff still remains close to this day. Our separate lives have kept us from being able to see each other as much as we'd like to, but a simple one word text can bridge the gap of our seeing each other.
We have been the "Generation X" of the radio industry and to see him moving on is somewhat bittersweet as I see him ride off into the sunset. He's a genuinely solid person and someone that I know would walk through the fires of hell with me, no matter whatever differences we have had over the 12 years of friendship.
I wish him the best in his new adventures and glad to see someone leave the industry on their own terms...and YES, it's on his own terms.
Barney. That is all.
