show that northeast ohio cares

A couple posts down I asked what area stations are doing to raise money for the victims of hurricane katrina. I hope the fact that nobody responded is because they just didn't post what thier station is doing. I know advertising one's own station is frowned apon on this board (and for good reason), but I think an excetption could be made here.

So if your station (or if you heard of a station that) is doing somekind of fund raiser for katrina victims, why not post what you're doing and spread the word of this good cause.

Clear Channel in Orlando did something yesterday. In Fredricksburg, Richmond, and Hampton Roads (all in Virginia) various clusters in each market have, or will be doing something soon to raise money. On the LA and MS boards people were telling what their stations (from all around the country) were doing.

I just saw today that the Indians, WTAM, and WEWS will be teaming up for a collection this weekend (Sept. 8-12).

So, PLEASE tell me that there's more going on in Cleveland, Akron, Canton, and Youngstown than this. Again, I haven't been listening to the radio and watching local news a whole lot this past week, so if stations are doing something, I don't know about it. I understand not every station or cluster can do something. But come on, I'm sure there's at least one out there.

So, PLEASE post what's going on for raising money for katrina victims and make me proud to be from Cleveland, because after not seeing any responses to my first post, I'm DISAPPOINTED.

I've heard most stations airing PSA's for the Red Cross. WEOL/930 last night started airing a set of PSA's from the Ad Council featuring New Orleans native Aaron Neville. His whole family made it out of town before the storm hit. Wonderfully done; I would make it mandatory airplay over all stations in town during the next two weeks, IMHO.

I did hear WMVX/106.5 last night auction off front-row tickets to the Rick Springfield concert at the CC/Belkin "Taste of Cleveland." It netted a good amount of change (total unsure), with proceeds going to the Red Cross. I wouldn't be surprised if other CC/Cleveland stations did the same thing.

OA has posted on OMW that: Radio One gospel WJMO/1490 Cleveland Heights is holding a blood - and financial - drive with help from the American Red Cross next Saturday, the 10th...it's called "The Praise 1490 Unity in the Community Day". And Clear Channel country WNCO/101.3 Ashland will hold a song auction next Tuesday, soliciting $5 donations for song requests all day...$10 for dedications."

And while this is national, Premiere's Glenn Beck (10a-12p on WHLO/640 and 9a-12p on WEOL/930) is organizing a live on-air auction for the storm victims. An impressive array of items was being assembled for next Thursday. It will air on both stations.

It's hard to keep track. I've been DX'ing WWL/870 out of New Orleans; the 50KW Entercom station consolodated operations with CC's and Citadel's clusters, and is now billed as "The United Broadcasters of New Orleans." An unprecented - and historic - level of cooperation.

BTW, this feed is now available online via one of Clear Channel's Baton Rouge stations:

<a target="_blank" href=http://ccri.eonstreams.com/ccri_la_batonrouge_wskr_am.asf>http://ccri.eonstreams.com/ccri_la_batonrouge_wskr_am.asf</a>

I believe the "United" feed is also being aired even on some public radio stations, and on a couple of non-CC/Entercom independents in the market. There are actually some commercials on it - mostly storm-related - and the FCC has given non-comms in the Gulf Coast region a 60 day waiver so they can carry these feeds.

WWL was 25KW a while back, and may still not be running 50...but due to the need to conserve generator fuel! It still kicks up here on skywave even at 25KW, though not as clear.

driving to work this am, i was listening to the car repair show on 57wkbn out of youngstown. the hosts, long time car repair dealers were talking with mangino about how 57wkbn was sending out trucks of medical supplies, blankets, food, toiletries and water from 4 metro yt shopping centers to the hurricane areas in new orleans AND mississippi. they were recruiting volunteeers to come down to accept donations from people bringing them and to help load the trucks. one of the local trucking companies was donating the trucks. kudos to 57wkbn for doing something practical and tangible rather than friviolous--david5258

Helps that they're one of the two dominant stations on a clear channel (formerly known as I-A) that uses a directional antenna (WBZ is the other). By concentrating their signal over the land areas of the US, even with 25kw they're putting the equivalent of 50kw (or pretty close to it) towards Ohio.

No disrespect taken. I guess I expected people to post to spread the word to get more people to participate in fund raisers, if they were doing anything, or heard of someone doing something. I wasn't looking for people to say "I work at station WXXX and we're great because we're doing something good."

Then after a couple of days when I saw about 100 people read my post, and nobody responded, I got frustrated. I was seeing examples of how other stations in other markets were doing things and I was seeing hardly anything from local stations, leading to the second post. But in the past day or two, I have seen and heard of more local efforts (in this post and in other places) for raising money to help katrina victims, so I feel a little better.

So I hope this helps explain my intentions behind my posts.
