Shows Critics Love But the Public (or You) Don't

What television shows are currently being aired that the critics just rave about but the general public doesn't seem to care for or you don't like personnally? The first one that comes to my mind is "Arrested Developement" on Fox. I am tired of television critics, especially Robert Biannco of USA TODAY, telling me what a great and compelling show it is and how it is the funniest show on television. I have tried watching it and personnally, I don't understand what the critics see in the show. I don't find it humorous, the majority of the characters are either annoying or very unlikable and the stories drag on for entirely too long. Does anyone else feel the same about "Arrested Developement"? What are some other television shows on the air that you feel fits in this catagory?
Edited by jwk1979 on 09/23/05 03:26 AM.

Nearly every 'critically acclaimed' show of the last 15 years!
Seriously, I first noticed this phenomenon around the time that 'Seinfeld' began taking off. I never cared for the show or the characters(and as far as acting goes, the only ones I found even occasionally entertaining were Jason Alexander and Wayne Knight). Same deal with 'Friends'.
As far as current shows, none of the Sunday HBO programs have ever appealed to me. I got especially tired of hearing how great 'The Sopranos' and the just-finished 'Six Feet Under' were...at least until critics started dumping on 'The Sopranos' for its delays in production. Throw 'Curb Your Enthusiasm' in here, too...I've found it quite easy to do that as far as Larry David is concerned.

Actually I find Arrested Development quite funny, unlike most sitcoms.
Then again I tend to like most of the critcally acclaimed stuff.
______________

I said the same things once, but I began to warm up to AD during the last half of last season. It's a much better show now than it was in the beginning.

I could never get into Lost (which is surprising, since I'm a major Survivor fan and it's supposed to catch the same vibe) or The West Wing, though. Too many confusing subplots in the former and too much political preaching in the latter.

Strictly from the "me" standpoint:

--The West Wing: I know the critics don't exactly flock to it now, but I NEVER understood the infatuation with this show. Not a single likeable character and dreadfully boring.

--Seinfeld: Never got what was supposed to be funny about it, save for a couple Kramer moments and the whole Festivus concept.

--The Sopranos: Seems to be "it's HBO so we can throw all variations of the F-bomb around and call it quality TV" (Not a moral issue for me by any stretch, it just reminds me of a child who learned is first "bad word.")

Of course, your mileage may vary.

Agreed. I never could get into any of NBC's so-called "must see" comedies on Thursday nights. "Seinfeld", "Friends", and "Will & Grace" have always left me cold.

You can add "Deadwood" in that category, as well. More generally, any time the critics talk about how "edgy" a particular new program is, I know that it is something for me to avoid like the plague -- it seems like when the critics say "edgy", what it actually means is unentertaining...

Couldn't agree more about Arrested Development. Gave it a shot a couple of time, and it was annoying as just about anything I'd ever seen. I place Curb Your Enthusiasm into the same category.

I don't understand why "24" is popular. Way too violent, no good guys (if our nation is depending on a psycho like the Kiefer Sutherland character to save it, is it worth saving?) and gimmicky. I gave it two episodes and left in disgust.

No Way!!! Comparing Survivor to Lost would be a giant stretch. Lost is a multi-level "Sci-Fi" Drama, Survivor is a really involved game show. Lost is more akin to Twin Peaks, or The X-Files.
