Shows turned down by the big 4

I have been wondering if there have been any shows turned down by the big 4 but where picked up by cable networks then became hits?

I heard years ago that Sons of Anarchy was one of those shows but I am not sure.

This is a somewhat dubious topic, as a "hit" at FX equates to somewhere in the ballpark of 3 to 5 million viewers, which would get you cancelled by any one of the Big 4.

I get what you're going for, though, and I think all the networks had a pass at "the Sopranos" but weren't keen on the lead as antigonist- which is odd because not only was it a massive hit for HBO, but now all the quality dramas use the flawed character as the lead tool.
