Shows with high spotloads

Every now and then someone brings up Michael Savage's spotloads. Can anyone fill me in on what his inventory requirements are? Talk Radio Network does not publicize their technical info, so you can't look up their network requirements, but when I hear it on WSB there seems to be plenty of local ads. I have heard of his show requiring a lot of ROS inventory though.

How many shows out there have such high network inventory? The norm for network ads per hour seems to be 5 minutes, but it's slowly shifting towards 6 minutes. Glenn Beck's show increased to 6:00/hour earlier this year, as did Sean Hannity when he switched syndicators. Dr. Laura almost did til Premiere undid it after her resignation. Allen Hunt has been at 6:00, and independent Free Talk Live the same. A lot of weekend shows are already at 6:00, including the TRN weekend lineup, Cigar Dave, shows on SSI, and Handel on the Law. To Premiere's credit though, most of their weekend shows are 5:00 or 4:00, and Handel is an exception. Same goes for Citadel. Meanwhile Dr. Dean Edell has been at 4:00 for as long as I can remember.

As far as shows with 7:00 of net ads or more, there seem to be a few but not many. The Alex Jones show has 7:00 net ads per hour and a shrimpy 7:20 local minutes. Not to mention his show begins right at the TOH, so several of his affiliates simply cover the first segment of his show with commercials. SSI's Rick and Bubba, on in morning drive, carries 8:00 net ads an hour with 13:20 for locals. Overnight shows like Coast to Coast AM and Red Eye Radio both carry 4:00 net ads an hour, but not Midnight Radio Network, which requires an insane 12:20 of net ads per hour (13:20 local). That's all I've heard so far.

For the record, when we started in syndication, the network spot load was 7 mins per hour and I managed to convince them to drop that to 6. Someday I'd like to take it to 5 when I can afford it.

Good move Ian - I totally agree that the fewer the spots the better. While programmers still look for great programming when all else is equal the higher local inventory will out.

Well, the extra minute I cut from Network went to program time - it wasn't converted to local. Keeping total spotload down is important too. Plus, it allowed me to change their clock from a crazy five breaks per hour down to four.
