What does the Citadel sale mean for 103.3 FM's most popular and profitable program?

Inquiring minds want to know.

I believe Ted and Tom were on vacation this week, no doubt burning up the phone lines talking about their future.

I meant the length of the show, if the producer and other on-air personalities not named Shredd and Ragan are safe, etc.

My older son is a big fan of S&R and hardly ever misses a segment.

I asked him how the guys sound lately and he said very energetic and on the ball.

Just reading into things that way I know but I'm thinking they have been told they are "safe" and to keep doing what they are doing.

It could also be that they haven't been told anything because the deal isn't done, and won't close for months. They could be "very energetic and on the ball" because they're either looking to move on to bigger and better things, or they figure that they'll need all the leverage that they can get in order to avoid cuts in money and/or personnel when it's time to get Dickeyed. Or, they're auditioning for a chance to be syndicated.

Just who would advise them that they're "safe"? Current management? <snort>

Sir Rox rolls another 300 game!! No gutters! ;D

That's all

Ahhh, the <snort> tag. Priceless, Rox. However. Word is S&R's contract comes due this summer. It could very well be they'll be ticketed for one more year because they're an asset of the station and by contract Citadel can't do anything that would adversely affect or diminish the value of the station. So maybe Citadel says "we'll renew for one." And S&R says, "we want three just like Norton or we walk." As long as they have a place to walk, they have the upper hand. If not, they play wait-and-see. Lew on Monday said he expects the deal to close in Q3, so S&R may not have to wait that long. Of course, Lew might come in and say "it's been nice, but we're gonna play twelve in a row" because that promised $50 million in synergies has to start some place. It'd be dumb, but...

What if the new owners/management ask S&R to return to morning drive?

Would they be willing to make the change if it is made worth their while in terms of a pay raise?

Sounds like they really enjoy the PM drive shift. The days of getting up at 4 am, especially in the winter weather of Buffalo, is never easy, especially the older you get. Getting in at noon and leaving at 8 pm or so is much easier on the family.

Why cannibalize the 97-Rock morning audience when they can beat up 'BEN and 'GR in the afternoon? By dumb luck, Citadel stumbled onto the perfect role for them. Whether Cumulus will pay to keep them is the real question.

To George's point.

Does anyone on here think S&R's staff is subject for removal? On their website I see James Kurdziel, (the program director.) Jim Jacka, (producer.) And Josh Potter (3rd Mic?)

I know both James and Josh do other day parts as well.

If anyone would go I would think Josh Potter, or are his particular talents unique enough to keep him around? I've heard him fill in for mornings once in awhile, he is unique but is that enough?

It'd be shame if any of the members of the S&R team were sacked when Cumulus takes over, but it's a given that some changes will be made because that's the way it works when a company buys another for $2.4B and talks about synergies six months before the deal is supposed to close. So who goes? Not S&R. Who has the biggest paycheck after that? James? Cumulus likes on-air PDs in medium and small markets, but would anybody be surprised if Hager runs the show for 97 and 103 not because he'd want to but because there would be no other choice. There are as many questions about sales as there are about programming. It wouldn't be out of the question to find that the GM & SMs are looking over their shoulders too. Sales has about three months to ratchet it up to surpass Entercom and Town Square in Q2 and Q3. You can bet they'll be lighting candles for the NFL and players to come to terms.

James is a bright guy who went from an intern to PD. Not bad for a guy who may indeed get chopped and end up getting frustrated with the industry, especially if he's going to want to stay in this area. If he's willing to move, I'd think he'd have a chance to land another job as an on-air personality or producer to start.
