Shredd & Ragan: Buffalo News

Very good read in this past Sunday's paper, ironically on the 'reefer holiday", of WEDG's afternoon duo. Has it really been 14 years of the show????
Interesting points on audience, content, opinions of their audience and how they dispense news and information. I truly believe some only hear about things on that show.

I listen pretty much every day for about 30-45 minutes, save for "best of". The sports content is particulary interesting, with NFL, NHL, even NASCAR segments.
Like some shows, its not perfect every time, every day, But we're human and it's supposed to have a human touch to it.

Good stuff

Helluva spread for S&R and the Edged. Save that puppy for contract renewal time! Shredd & Ragan aren't everybody's cup of tea, rather an acquired taste. Nonetheless, these two guys and their production crew come up with some truly wacked-out stuff that sometimes totally misses the target and is woefully un-funny, but most times very entertaining and dead on. Hell, even Babe Ruth didn't bat .500. Nice to see the behind the scenes members of the show get some credit, too.

S&R seem to keep the AM gasbags at WGR and WBEN in check by taking a "Daily Show" approach to news, sports and entertainment, and not taking themselves too seriously (like the B&B boys at WBEN.) They also do a much better show than the syndicated ashnuggets in AM drive on the Edge. The News story gives readers an interesting behind the scenes look at show prep and writing (even though the Good Friday bit was pretty lame... the last few lines being its saving grace.)

S&R is a good example of the kind of programming that beats iPod and MP3 fodder. It also proves that radio can attract and keep young(er) listeners. Hmm, might it have anything to do with the fact that these guys are allowed to talk, entertain (and sometimes even fall flat on their faces) rather than being forced to play 10 active rock hits in a row?

I think it's a crime that Citadel relegated Shred and Ragan to afternoon drive. I always thought you put your very best in morning drive. Why the Citadel brain trust thinks a syndicated duo is preferable to a local team is beyond me. Then again, since Shred and Ragan's target is men 18 to 34, many in that demo are probably sleeping in after a night of partying, so perhaps the 3 - 6pm slot is morning drive for a portion of those listening in. ;)

Philip_Airtime:
well..the show is 3-7pm, but
when it was on in the morning,
i recall i would have to either set an
alarm to listen to a segment (and pray it started on time),

or..happen to wake up around 8:30 or so (sometime just
missing the blotter, on mondays : ( and, catch the
'recap' edition that they are known to do, esp. if
there is a hot topic. now, i can freely, listen from the
start, but usually tune out during 'recap' hour, but
be sure to come back for the last hour, esp
the your-turn segment...it has its moments.
