Shrewsbury Cable - Anyone still have them?

Shrewsbury is one of the only remaining towns in Massachusetts that still has its own independent cable TV company. I recently checked out their lineup, and it looks like it's not too bad. I know they carried both WJAR and WPRI from Providence pretty late, but I remember being surprised when I found that they dropped NHPTV. I thought that every cable system in Massachusetts carried NHPTV. But anyway, I'm just curious as to how many new customers are signing up for them. I'm not sure they have an option in the town of Shrewsbury, but I know that both DirecTV and Dish Network have been really popular. I would imagine that if anyone new to the town heard that they have a town-owned cable company, I'd bet they would hesitate to even sign up. You should usually expect that from any independent old-fashioned cable company, the quality is going to be garbage.

Well it's actually Shrewsbury Electric Light and Cable (SELCO). My parents have it and they've had no problems with it.

Wait...EVERY town in Massachusetts carries New Hampshire Public Television? Ha ha! I know you meant in greater Boston, but still! I wonder if anybody in (413) still has a cable system like this?

Braintree and Norwood both have their own cable services as well.

I know, but I don't think it's their primary cable provider, and both of them came in rather recently. I think that both of them have Comcast as their primary cable provider, as does most of the Boston area. I know that most of Worcester county has Charter as its main cable provider, but from what I understand, the town of Shrewsbury does not have a choice (unless Verizon FiOS is available there now).

Here in fact is their line-up...including digital...

With the exception of MSNBC and TV Land, both crapola channels in their own rights and a change in calls needed on WABU (WBPX), WNDS (WZMY), and any UPN and WB references changed to CW and My Network (both horrible nets if you ask me), the basic line-up itself seems solid. But I notice WGBH and WGBX are back to back (2 and 3 respectively). Never saw that before. And also no NHPTV, instead it's RI PBS/WSBE at the 36 spot.

On digital Nick Gas no longer exists. I think SELCO needs to update things a little bit though. But i'm glad to know at least monopoly cable system Comcast or Charter doesn't play everywhere near Boston/Worcester.

I did check Zap2It's site. Looks like the people at SELCO really need to update!

Not quite. Southeastern Mass carries WGBH & WSBE. I assume the cape does too.
The "Pioneer Valley" (Hampden, Hampshire, and Franklin counties/ Charter & Comcast) all carry WGBY & WEDH out of Hartford.
Berkshire County (Time Warner systems only. The other three towns which have Charter I am not as certain about) have WGBY & WMHT out of the Albany area in NY.
I believe that the Time Warner system up in Orange-Athol actually has WGBH and NHPR (WEKW Keene, NH)

Isn't SELCO a little behind when it comes to HD channel offerings? Based on their lineup, it's VERY limited indeed. Also, the local channel lineup doesn't seem that different than what you'd get from Charter in a nearby town. SELCO's Providence channels are limited to WJAR and WSBE. It doesn't look like you get WSBE in Worcester, but you do get everything else and many times more HD channels. So, I am not sure what the hype is about.

Now, if SELCO still carried WFSB and WWLP and all the Providence nets, etc. (as were once carried by some systems in the Worcester area), I'd be the first to applaud. At this point, my reaction is more of a yawn.

But is anyone watching WJAR, WSBE, WFSB, or WWLP in Worcester County? From a TV geek perspective, it's cool - but realistically, it's the Boston stations that are covering Worcester, and with budget cuts at the smaller market stations they're not producing with the quality they used to.

In Framingham, I get WMUR on FiOS. Do I watch? Never. WCVB has the same programming, local news that actually covers my area, and the resources of being in TV market #7.

The areas of New England where I can see two TV markets being available are places like Seacoast NH (Portland and Boston), and southwestern Connecticut (New York and Hartford). But somewhere like the city of Worcester that's clearly not in the Providence or Hartford TV markets? Not so much.

Well, cable in Worcester used to include those channels. If you work in an adjacent market or enjoy seeing a little variety in any given Sunday's NFL game offerings, perhaps it would be a benefit. Just saying that they were once offered - and i'd have been impressed if SELCO still offered some of those. They don't, so the point of the original post is lost on me.

When I first moved to Barre MA in 1998, all three full-power Springfield stations were carried on cable--WWLP, WGGB and WBGY. Springfield is closer than Boston to Barre and I often watched, especially for weather forecasts. I think they're all gone now and the only out-of-market station carried is WJAR Providence. Now _that_ choice makes no sense.

TV coverage of anything happening in central Massachusetts? I mean west of Worcester? Good luck, except on NECN. The local news on Boston channels is mostly irrelevant to those living in central Massachusetts.

That lineup definitely looks outdated. I actually don't even think they carry WJAR anymore, but they still carry WSBE. And I think Charter still carries WJAR throughout the Worcester area.
