shrinking air shifts

Bob Hudson, also known as Emperor Bob Hudson passed away several years ago. He was on several stations: KRLA, KFWB, KEZY and KGBS. There were probably others.

Actually, KBLA on 1500 not 1510 went top 40 before KHJ, as I recall either Dec. 1964 or Jan. 1965. KBLA had 3 hour air shifts. Even at KFXM and KMEN in the I.E. we had 3 hour airshifts. Give me 3 or at the very max. 4 hour airshifts. 5 hours is too long and 6 and 7 are insane !

Didn't the respective GMs at both KFXM & KMEN put a second hat on most? Production, music research, news, and so on. I just read at Doug Calagro's site about Garry Marshall virtually being a one-man editor/writer/layout guy on KFXM's Tiger Mag.

Also, remember split shifts? This happened more in the 50's than 60s. For example, a DJ would work from 2 til 4 pm, then once again from 7 til 9 pm. What was the thinking behind that? I always wondered.

That was pre clear ch. cost cutting ! Back in the late 1950's Top 40 KUTY 1470 Palmdale had Bill Loren and Norm Woodruff splitting 6am to 9am and Noon to 3pm, and 9am to Noon and 3pm to 6pm. As for KBLA jocks a few names come to mind; Vic Gee (now known as Jim Carson), Harry Newman, Sid Wayne, Tom Duggan (Yes the KCOP-TV GUY), Bob Dayton, Huggy Boy, and later Jim Wood, Roger Christian and Dave Diamond.

I just got off the road from a recruiting swing for my production campany.
Many of the throngs of talents I'm talking to are currently doing 0 hours shift.
There's some good people out there that are simply out because the new radio model needs savings over talent. Things are changing. Not for the worst just not for the better.

Who said split shifts... ugh.

Longer shifts - 5 days.
