Shure V-15 cartrige question

I've got an original Shure V-15, no stylus. Will a V-15 Type II, III, IV or whatever replacement work well in it? At all?

They will all work but give different response and tracking characteristics. The MR (micro-ridge) was the best. I still have it on my old Thorens table. If you want it to play sweet for low cost...pick up a PAS-3 on E-Bay and do the Spice upgrade to it. You will get the Audio Research silky liquid sound for low bux. http://www.normankoren.com/Audio/Spice_preamp.html

Jensen 1-1 transformers are also very useful for cleaning up ground loops and blocking RF garbage. I use them to interface the computer to the PAS-3. I've been slowly transferring my old vinyl to Apple Loss-less files (giant hardrives are cheap these days) and will probably send them and the table on their way via E-Bay later this year. I'll also be jettisoning my my old tube amps as my Crown K1 kicks butt and is very neutral (mucho headroom). UREI 809s will be going also. Need more space for new stuff.

Thank you all.

After I posted, I discovered that if the big, plastic shell is removed from the V-15 series, it will host a replacement designed for Realistic RXT5 and 6, built by Shure. This was RS's top 'o line, and the specs are nearly mirrored to the V-15.

Speakerman, I'm currently using a Shure M97E in a Technics SL 1800 with either a Shure or Stanton broadcast phono preamp, depending on need. That's ahead of a JBL mixer to the computer. The Stanton has selectable EQ settings( RIAA, flat, Eur). For 78's, a classic BSR is put into service.

The "home" unit is a Benjamin-Miracord, a $2 yard sale special that came with the V-15. It came with a working McIntosh MAC 1000 receiver and contemporary Infinity Speakers for $100. Gotta luv yard sales!

If I were you, I'd keep the records as backup. You never know when a hard drive is going to take a crap and your entire music collection goes "bye bye". LPs don't take up much room.

Two or three backup hard drives take up even less room. And there's no additional time needed to re-transfer the (now in worse condition) vinyl to hard drive again.

Now, if you want to keep the vinyl for the collectible or nostalgia factors - THAT's another story.

Multiple 500Gig hard drives are cheap and easy to work with on my Mac. I keep backups on DVDs also. Vinyl and turntable to go bye-bye. Folks will give them good homes. The spiced PAS/Jensen stays.
