SICK AND TIRED...

I’m not in the business, so my comments reflect only my observations and opinions. I appreciate that many here know radio inside and out. I am, however, someone who loved radio. Unfortunately, I rarely listen anymore.

I don't think that being competent at news is mutually exclusive with being entertaining. A station does not need 24/7 news reading to be a good source. Top and bottom of the hour news fed by strong reporting is very sufficient (and of course breaking in when something happens). The rest of the time can be talk. It works well for stations like WGN in Chicago.

Unfortunately, the local CC stations don't have the resources to respond to breaking news. Using callers as ad hock reporters does not get it done, at least not very well.

As far as Baker, I think that he could be very good. He is just too stuck on playing the Neanderthal shtick. It all seems very contrived to me. Maybe I am wrong.

Baker is unfortunate.

I'm just a listener too. If you have heard one Rush Limbaugh broadcast, IMHO, you have heard them all. What boggles my mind is that he admitted that he was "carrying the water" for people who did not deserve it; basically he was, at best, not fourthcoming in his reservations about people he was supporting in public but had doubts about in private. In other words, dude was dishonest. Yet people "trust" him? I find it unbelieveable.

Well, the original post is dead on. I am a 26 yr old male who frequents, 610, 1560, 650 and rarely 790 (don't care too much for them) in that order. Up until recently, I NEVER cared to listen to 950. They reminded me of other stations like 740, 700, and whatever else I am leaving out. All talking heads and political this and that. They should bring the retirement community and people at Depends over, they would fit in during breaks. I Now I listen to The 9-5-0, even if not the most polished apple of the bunch, I now tune in for W&J, (I like them, sorry haters), Mancow and Dave Ramsey, besides them I don't care much for the rest of the lineup. Maybe I need to grow up, but they are, in a way, bringing new listeners to 950. If I want news, I go to CNN or a local channel.

Well hidistortion we all have our prefrences. You make good arguements. We all agree its sloppy and for being in a top 10 market. It is real sloppy! 3 minutes of dead air at a time when in automation.

I think too many of you on here are a good comparison to one musician listening to another musician and pointing out shortcomings. Ya'll point out things that the regular joe listener never would and a good chance not even care about. I know that all rough ends should be dealt with but IMO a person can go too far with pointing things out that probably arent going to be caught or even matter to the a great deal who hear it.
3 minutes of dead air is an engineering issue and not a personality issue. I am not looking for a station to be perfect, just do stuff that I enjoy. Maybe I just dont set my expectations as high as the average for radio. I wont lose sleep tonight just because my fav station had 3 minutes of dead air. Hell the 9-5-0 is the closest to having an all day lineup i want to listen to. I'll be more than happy to listen to a 3 minute dead air time everyday in their defense! Just as hifidistortion said and i said originally, most of you judge on what you like and want. But believe it or not, there is other preferences out there. With ya'lls mentality of "gotta satisfy my liking" I could have started crying about all the news/talk station on here the day this site started about how boring and lame they are. Ya'll just gotta keep in mind there is other aspects that are important in a radio station than what is important to YOU.

Well reasoned.

I wish you would have "discovered" talk radio prior to what we have now. I think you'd be astounded just how small these current commentators are by comparison. But if you're entertained, keep doing what you're doing. Don't let anything steal your joy! as one of these current malcontents is fond of saying.

well, i can sit around and wish for alot of things. but i cant help when i was born and all i can go on is what i have now, even if it was so great in a different era. So it's no secret that talk radio has really made an explosion in popularity in that last i'd say 5 to 10 years, and talk radio was so much better back in a different era. then why did it make its explosion AFTER the period in time that alot of you claim to have been so good compared to the way it is nowadays????

Glad some can stand it. I used to like Rush until I realized he was more interested in pushing agendas than rooting out the truth.

The boys who run Cumulus aren't the sharpest tools in the shed. More like they ARE the tools in the shed. They tanked their own station! They KNEW 97-5's signal sucked. They didn't care. If you'll recall...Rock 103-7 started on 97-5 ...but when it became clear the signal blew they switched it to 97-5. The brothers are cheap bastards and didn't want to put any money into the station. 97-5 could've been something great. News/talk on the FM that didn't push a Republican agenda (cough 950...Clear Channel). The people at 97-5 worked their BUTTS off. ALL OF THEM. That place was the last stop for many talented people. They had no budgets. It was Pat Fant's project, Laurie Kendrick's baby, and the staff was bare bones.

Mike and Martha and Abel in the morning...Pruett, Shannon, and Julie Takahashi in the afternoon, Laurie, Jim and Chuck at night. It seemed like Belinda B. was there all day long. I don't know if she was recorded or what. THEN the new pd kicks Outlaw Dave off the air at KIOL so he can do the shift. Dumb, Dumb, Dumb, Dumb ....DUMB!!!!!!!!!! Radio is a dying industry, people. The WGA is about to vote on a strike November 15th. Television writers are even closer to a strike. It's a shame.

In case the 9-5-0 bashers need more ammunition, they had dead air from roughly 5:01 till at least 5:10 (when I got home and got out of the car) this afternoon.

First guy to say something along the lines "Well, at least it's better than Fox News" or "why can't that happen during W&J?" gets a laurel, and hearty handshake.

The boys??? Brothers??? You talking about Lew and John Dickey??? Cumulus is a PUBLIC corporation with Lew Dickey as CEO and President....and John as COO but there are others (including the stockholders they have to answer to) who "run" the ship as well...and they paid $32.5 million or so for 103.7 (and that was before building the new 2000ft tower)....Yep, Cumulus may do some things low budget in operations it seems (but then tell me a company that doesnt; CC? ATT? TXU? Centerpoint?!!!! Its not just a radio thing)....they could have done better promotions of 103.7 in its Rock days....and maybe they need new local leadership.....but spending money on the station is hardly correct.....(at least in the technical side)....they HAVE spent cash...lots of it...whether they made a good ROI is another question and I am not the banker or financial guy to answer that....
