Sick N Tired: A Post About The Old KTFM

Thank god no one has ranted about this in a little while. I am on the Dallas board on a thread about changes at CASA when someone references about CASA sounding like the old KTFM. There were a few comments afterward all talking about KTFM. It seemed as if it just opned the floodgates. Why cant people just get over it and let it go already? I am posting here because I want to know if you people are just as sick of it as I am. I expect Bennie, Nikki, Fabian, Joey Dee, Dominique to all respond and probably old staffers too. All probably defending the long lost spirit of a station that died many years ago. Other than them, how many of you think that station and those days should just rest in peace, or be cherished forever. What are your feelings toward the old KTFM? Did you like it? Hate it? Like/Love/Hate the ex jocks???

In my opinion, I think that is the problem with San Antonio radio. People just hold onto the past like it is going to change anything. In Dallas you dont see for the most part hanging onto stations that mean nothing to the current market. Sure you have those few who do, but I think people should just let it go. 102.7 KTFM is dead San Antonio. Its time to move on.

Why would you expect me to reply and defend the old ktfm if I wasn't even there when it was a #1 station?? I was only there for a year and that was right before it went away for good. When it was #1 and the only game in town...I was one of the many teenagers growing up listening to the station. I get tired myself when people bring up this and that about the station back in the day because I too feel some things should stay in the past and people do need to move on. But you bringing a thread from the Dallas boards is gonna stir it up even more so now we will be subjected to having to hear from all defending this and that about how great it was, etc. I'm not here to defend it because I wasn't there.

The beautiful thing about KTFM was the way it changed with the times. They very rarely blew up an entire format to make a complete change. Instead, the music and the presentation evolved over time. Up until CBS, the one continuity was the agressive promotion and the community involvement. Plus, those calls are worth a couple of points in and of themselves.
My regret is that none of the posters on this board remember much before 1996...
now get off my lawn.

I for one dont miss those old days. Although I do miss hearing Drex. Drex's numbers beat every station in town by a long shot. I guess thats is why he is up there in market 3.

Oh and yea, the threads about the old KTFM did get tired and boring and starting a new one wasnt at all smart if you were sick of them too.

Oh and one more thing. If Infinity didnt flip formats every 6 months near the end, they might still be around today. But they would be in more direct competition with Mix. But then again, Mix was a VERY different station way back then.

Well you just had to mention my name. Look I agree that people need to move on. Yes, back in the day it was the station. I agree with grandchesters comments. That is what made the station different. What I miss is that we do not have a true chr format in this city, but the question would also have to be asked is that, would a true chr format be a dominate player in a hip hop world (probably not). Oh and radiojudge if you were really tired you would have not opened up this can of worms. You should have left it alone.

To grantchester...I remember the Sonny in the Morning days, and the days when Drex was on at night with Hot Henrietta as a phone screener/sidekick.

To The Radio Judge...

Hey Judge the reason why everyone from the San Antonio area always makes such a fuss about the original KTFM is simple. First of all most of what they are saying is true! Fantastic, creative, localized, on target...are all words to use to describe the good days at KTFM.

Secondly and more importantly...KTFM holds great honor because of how much todays radio stations, in San Antonio or anywhere in America pale in comparison. Even the highest rated stations in the largest markets today are LAME and uncreative, and almost hard to listen to in comparison to KTFM in it's hey day. Even worse when KTFM was hot (in San Antonio) it was viewed as only average in radio circles nationally.

In other words an average sounding station from the 70's-90's would kill any circa 2000 cookie cutter radio stations.

I have worked in San Antonio, and Washington DC, and Baltimore, and have friends still on the air in Phoenix and other markets who agree.

Modern radio at it's very very very best.....SUCKS.

The listeners know it and are leaving in droves, and the management at these crappyt stations do not care.

So forgive those of us who remember that the listener and the music were the reason to be on the air.

I don't care what market, what station...They all suck.

Being #1 with a 10 share now only truly means that the competition in that market is just that BAD, not that the #1 station is really that good.

Good Luck

I agree with Patriot, modern radio does suck. But you also have to realize that if KTFM was so damn great, why did the Beat destroy it? I think near the end, Infinity didnt even care. Why else would they flip every 6 months? Oh well, rest in peace. I for one dont miss you.

The reason that KTFM got the beatdown from the Beat because they were unprepared for the new trend in music, they were in a comfort zone, egoes and they were not fast enough to find a solution. Overall they were asleep. Now as for the beat, they were smart to see all of this happening. They just used common sense and had 2 consultants one of course helped KTFM stay number 1 for years. The staff that is there now knows what needs to happen for them to stay number 1. They've been there, done that and they learned from others mistakes. Peace!!!!

people change, listeners change, music changes.....its called evolution of pop culture and life. lets move on.

I SECOND THAT.....LETS MOVE ON!

ITS NOT ABOUT WHAT YOU DID 5 TO 20 YEARS AGO...ITS WHAT YOUR DOING NOW!
AND SOME OF YOU HACKS AINT DOING A DAMN THING!

PATRIOT...I FEEL YOU THOUGH! THATS REAL TALK!

PS...

SHOUT OUT TO THE COUCH IN THE OLD KTFM WOMENS RESTROOM, THE GIANT BEAR, AND THE DAMN LIZARD CAGE, PARTY PATROL, MASQUERADE PARADE, AND THE WATERMAN THANKSGIVING TURKEYS!

OMG!! He said shouts out the that old busted up couch in the ladies room. Yeah you mean the one with all the stains in it? I think I remember the ladies say that no one ever sat on it cause of all the mysterious broken springs and the strange moaning that came from that ladies room. Radio groupies sure have class, let me tell ya. Hell, you could have caught herpes just sitting on it.

was KTFM's rival back in the late 80s Power 93 (i'm not talking about Power 106.7)? Back then I listened to KTFM more than Power, but heard some airchecks of Power with RJ Renyolds and the music sounded somewhat similar to what KTFM was playing back then. Then Power got fliped to Star, then spanish, so no comp. I guess KSJL when it was on 96.1 wasn't much of a rival being that station was more of an urban lean but did play better hip hop in the late 90s as opposed to all the "booty music" KTFM continously played. It did look like the beat did take away listeners from KTFM as well as MIx when they were playing less "Dawsons Creek" type crap. But KTFM is gone, it was going in that direction, and 102.7 still is after a failed attempt to be a rock station and now this "we play what we want" which is mostly classic rock and stuff already heard on Q1019 and Magic.

As a native San Antonian i recall in the early 80's KTFM had a lot of competition.

KITY 929 Continous Music Dance/Urban
Z-100 Mainstream CHR
KSJL AM Dance/Urban
Class-100 Hot ac but sounded CHR
KTSA-CHR

I think KTFM won for many reasons. Jocks sounded like SA. Always Topical no liner bs, Innovative contests, music was tight and right on target for SA. Jocks sounded MAINSTREAM. Not a bunch of screaming YO YO YO Wassup every break. Content was KING!

I remember when top jocks Catfish and Joe Nasty created a stir by going across to the competition. There was a right up on the front page of the newspaper when Catfish played an air raid siren on the air one morning and began this long bit on a possible attack.. Many people at the airforce bases called in and thought it was an actual alert!

Joe Nasty use to do some wild and wacky stuff in the afternoon. THAT was good radio!

You are forgetting KSAQ Q96fm Killer New Music
KTFM had Competition until Saint Patrick's Day of 1991. Just out of curiosity when did KLTO flip from the beat simulcast to 977 rock?

Seems like SA town is like retro cursed of something. I mean Q1019, Star 810, Power 1067, Mix 96.1?

Power 93
Star 93
Q96fm
KMIX 106

anyone have any old playlist or tape recordings from ktfm during the 90s? I have 1 or 2 from the earley 90s somewhere.. moved to tampa from s.a in 1995 and the chr here musically could never touch ktfm..

That has got to be the most amusing untrue no way in holy hell rumor I have ever heard. Why would Drex leave market #3 to come back to market #30? Why would Drex leave 1 point whatever million a year for obviously far LESS money. No way BMP could match let alone beat what he is making in Chicago. Whomever told you that was pulling your chain. Only way it could possibly happen is if Drex syndicated it. But what are the odds since he doesnt work for BMP?

dj damilia, I have a August 1991 copy of ktfm hot 103 all request sunday night with greg martin around here somewhere recorded on a maxell xlii-s heat resistant cassette tape. Also on side b it has 2 songs from the ricco and D-street from the mix show on ksjl 96.1
