What is it with all these really sick radio stunts?

GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan (AP) -- City police and local animal-control organizations were kept busy fielding telephone calls from angry and concerned pet lovers after two morning radio show hosts announced that they would drown a dog on the air.

LAND O'LAKES, Florida (AP) -- A radio station stunt that had three listeners dressed up like escaped jail inmates went awry Friday when dozens of people called police. The resulting ruckus tied up traffic during morning rush hour, authorities said.

Desperation for attention. I note that the Florida station is owned by Clear Channel. Certainly their attorneys are getting tired of dealing with this stuff. No, they didn't break any laws but the liability of such a stunt was huge. As the police noted, had they determined that the goofballs were a "threat", they are authorized to shoot.

I can tell you right now that WKLQ, the station that pulled the infamous "drowning puppies" stunt, did it for the attention. The story they're feeding the local media around here is that they did it to bring about water safety awareness, but anyone who knows the state of the market can tell you they did it for the attention. WKLQ flat out sucks, there's no question about that. They do somewhat well in the ratings only by default, and even considering that much, they still aren't doing too well. The morning show is grasping at the air(waves) trying to gain some ground, and all they can do is stupid crap like this that only digs their already 6-foot-deep hole deeper.
______________

Maybe not "sick," but my all-time favorite is when the morning guy on WBAB in Long Island told kids to listen in for a huge announcement... "Hey kids! There is no Santa Claus!!"

I'm sure their shysters and ambulance chasers are laughing all the way to the bank.
