www.925Jackfm.com In Toronto Canada, they just fired the (recently hired) Jack Jocks and went to "No DJ's".

I'm expecting Buffalo NY to do the same when Stern leaves.

In Canada, there is regulation in place that WILL declare the behaviour of Jack Toronto to be illegal, and I expect the CRTC (the Canadian version of FCC) to punish them for it.

This is because, in Canada, a third of the broadcast week must be commited to local programming.
No local news, weather, sports or traffic reports, at the very least, in the morning drive, is a clear message that they(Jack Toronto) are ignoring CRTC regulation.

Furthermore, their licence expires August 31st 2006. If they wish to have it renewed, I expect, at the very least, to hear local news in the morning...even if it somehow still leaves them free to air a coast to coast morning show of some sort.
If they're smart, they'll restore a local morning show to better support their chances of getting their licence renewed.

I'm only sorry there's no FCC regulation in place for the American "Jockless" stations that operate longer than a designated format change time with no personality and/or news staff.

(designated format change time, respectfully, refers to a time where a station is jockless to introduce the new format...and that should never be more than two weeks.)
______________

Radio history is littered with radio stations who've been jockless/automated for years. That cannot be regulated by the FCC.

We're beginning to see SOME evidence V.H. audiences are LIKING the minimal interruptions so far. They like the absence of mindless clutter and "jock talk" a lot.

I would not cast a vote for remaining jockless permanently, however, but I do think there's a clear message being sent by V.H. format listeners (who, with few exceptions, are flocking to these stations in droves), that the typical DJ/ personality approach won't be acceptable for these stations. The jocks will have to compliment the format, not take it over.

IMHO.

JACK/Las Vegas is an interesting example of what happens when you put a Variety Hits station on in a market saturated with similar music.

It's still early, but KKJJ has passed up and inflicted major ratings damage to 80s KSTJ, Classic Rock KKLZ, Classic Hits KXPT, and mainstream Rock KOMP.

Time will tell whether this was honeymoon sampling or if Jack stays ahead of these other stations. If Jack stays strong in Vegas, it might encourage stations to go Variety Hits in other markets saturated with similar formats, for example Tampa Bay.

That's a good point, but should it be personality that "Lived those times" or someone young that just happens to know how to work with the format?
______________

The presence of Cox's 80s "Point" format in Houston and my town of Tampa has been perceived as a major force behind keeping Variety Hits out of those two markets. But with Cox flipping their Point station in Birmingham, AL last week, combined with KKJJ's success so far in Las Vegas... it is interesting.

The only thing for Tampa is that right now, Infinity's FM properties here are all fully utilized (their one underperforming FM flipped to Spanish a few months back). Cox isn't going to cut its own throat against 101.5 The Point, and Clear Channel is doing the "Whatever Weekend" thing with Hot AC Mix 100.7, more working on increasing cume for the station than anything...

Don't think it matters- the music provides the nostalgia... jocks reminiscing about "back in the day" is what's helped kill oldies stations.
