love this good to hear a refreshing internet radio station good job any commnets?? ;D

been covered here; I'm slated to meet Dave Mason, folk hero to the radio stars, sometime next week at SOSD. A great offering of local radio done right.

Well, guess who's tickled pink to see this? ME!! (and the rest of the folks at SignOn Radio). Let's face it, the only difference between what we're doing at the U.T. and what we've done at CC is that we don't have a big tower thingie to broadcast from. We know we're not perfect. We may be doing it right, but we could be doing it "righter". The fire is there--the passion is growing among the staff at the U.T., and there are plenty of "writers" who have the stuff to be good "talkers" too. No one sees this as a big threat to traditional radio -yet. The U.T. is committed to providing the news to the community, and now we can spread the good word about San Diego to the REST of the world thru this online endeavor. I know we have a long way to go. If the support from the UT continues?? --we'll get there.

I was in the Sign on San Diego Radio studios on Monday. What a class act it is. Dave Mason and the producer "Lou" have a tight ship. In fact, it was a real radio station minus the traditional antenna. The programming focus is on the newspaper, however it's more of a timely. The morning paper is about six-hours old when the ink hits your fingers; the "radio" is immediate.

The station has everything: ISDN quality phone lines, a production studio, good microphones, and a quality studio that is "shhh" quiet. Again, the only item missing: a traditional antenna.

Dave is there at 7 a.m. for a broadcast that is similar to the old KOGO news wheel. It is more than reading the newspaper, it's updates too. Traffic and weather are thrown in as well.

Charlie and Harrigan hit the airwaves at 9 a.m. They "broadcast" from a secret location in North County, most likely sipping some of Jack's fine wine (rumor).

Then there is the two hour block that features Ken and Clark. If there is a cause needed for local programming, sample this show. The majority of guests will be from the paper, but it is more than an advertising tool to buy the paper -- the show compliments the story. Best bests: Karla Peterson, Steve Breen, and the movie guy.

The afternoon shifts to Union-Tribune hosts and they are developing the mic skills in addition to their writing.

In all, Sign on San Diego radio is what radio is missing -- and with the advent of high speed wireless broadband coming to a car near you, and available world-wide, SOSD Radio has the potential of becoming the standard used by other mediums wanting to get in on the next wave: local coverage that radio lacks.

Sounds nice in concept, but so was Washington Post radio. We all know what happened there.

Yeah... they ended up firing everyone except the people who created and ran the format ???

The Fourth and Fifth Estates are blurring.

William Shakespeare might write today: "Kill all the radio executives!"

Hi Fred, I hope all is well in Texas.

Does it make money? It has ads, and has a paid staff, but actually makin' money .... don't know. The paper has invested a lot of money in studios and has a very high caliber talent pool within the paper and have tapped several radio pros: Ken Copper, Clark Anthony, Dave Mason, Charlie and Harrigan, among the the cast.

For me, it has the missing element from local radio: local events, talk and the like -- no politics. Homespun radio.

You need to look at the entire online experience that the U-T / Sign On is trying to create. The radio portion is one piece of that, and makes sense as the revolution continues in the newspaper world. Besides they just started the second stream, so it is very early in the process. Their listener levels are still relatively small. But Sign On San Diego as a website, it by far the #1 local site in San Diego for news, information, and things happening around San Diego. They seem to be working on enhancing the entertainment value of the site.

Sign on San Diego's main problem used to be their load times for the home page. It was too complex and took too long to load, which resulted in the user seeing a blank page for 30 seconds. Then the entire page would suddenly show up, if you had the patience to wait. They've obviously made changes because the site now loads progressively (so you can tell something is actually happening now) and doesn't appear to be as complex as it used to be. Maybe they'll pick up more listeners, I wish they had a live news channel.
