Your naivete is stunning, katethepoet. Like others before you have said, radio is a business, and radio business people are not out to lose money. ClearChannel is not a public radio station that goes dialin' for dollars four times a year.

Let's say that you owned a grocery store and while you gave it a good go for three years. There comes a time that you have to just give it up when you don't have customers. In the case of KLSD, the number of customers is dropping off every quarter. Do you keep the business running out of charity or do you keep it face the reality and shut down when you have a very small number of customers? Many years ago there was a movie called, "Moscow Does Not Believe In Tears." In this case, the movie might be called "ClearChannel Does Not Believe In Tears."

Air America and KLSD is a prime example when the Internet is the best way to serve a reasonably small but loyal group of listeners. While I'm sorry to see AAR potentially go away here in San Diego, as someone who enjoys listening to alternative viewpoints to my own, AAR never appealed to me and apparently has not appealed to a lot of people after a three year run here in San Diego.

Those folks on-line do not hear the local ads and do not visit the local advertisers. That is one of the main reasons why KLSD is coming up short.

Your passion is noted, however if you get 50 folks on Monday ... consider it a success. The main drive to save KSLD should have begun when the station was on air after KPOP stopped. Sales could and should have done a better job. However, that's all in the rear view mirror ....

Kate, I appreciate your earnestness and passion. There's a severe shortage of both in the world today.

Unfortunately, petitions and protests aren't the way to change these things in radioland or even broadcastland for that matter. As Media Hack Chris ably pointed out, ratings and revenue are how things work in commercial radio. Period. If you have a good product aimed at the right people, you can do well. I wrote somewhere else KLSD was never marketed or sold properly, and while I may be wrong, fixing those ills would've at least given the station a longer lifespan than signing a petition as if you're trying to get the original Star Trek renewed for another season. It just doesn't work like that in this business. As sympathetic as I am to where you're coming from, it's not a conspiracy, it's just business.

As a result, you're unlikely to find much love or interest at this board, just some condescending sniping. San Diego IS a ripe market for progressive talk, and KLSD seemed to have the goods, but in between the programming it was clear there was some empty space. You just have to have an aggressive sales plan which tries to sell the station as something more than a multi-station buy, and doesn't behave as though the station is only catering to O.B., South Park, or exclusively to hippies (are there even hippies around anymore?).

Having rallys, and putting together promos that say Clear Channel sucks (which Stacy did) is just going to anger Clear Channel and narrow the chances for another job with Clear Channel or other broadcasters. This is simply immature behavior for broadcasters. If you want an example of a true broadcaster that is a symbol of class, that man's name is Dave Mason! Shame on Stacey for his promos and protests, and Scooter for his rant on Saturday. By the way Clear Channel does not suck it is a business and makes decisions based on such. Stacey, if you wanted to save KLSD then why didn't you and Scooter volunteer to go out on sales calls with the reps, and solicit some liberal businesses. There are lots of sympathetic business owners that would have sponsored your station. And concerning the people complaining about the signal, KPOP had that signal for over 20 years and never had lower than a 2 share. KLSD in the last book had a .9. In the words of the Godfather "Its not personal just business".

Regarding the signal...I have noticed a big drop off in the last week. It was off the air for a few hours a few nights ago and when it came back on it was much weaker. I think maybe they turned off the transmitter on 47th street (or whatever) and began running it thru the Santee site. That would make sense, explaining the drop off in signal strength. Does anybody know if this is accurate? Somewhere I read that KCBQ actually had better coverage with a 5kw signal originating from an old site approximately in the SDSU area than it did with 50kw from Santee.

And in listening to the KLSD rally I didn't hear Stacy say that Clear Channel sucked, not at all, I thought he was totally respectful and responsible.

Santee? That might explain the clearer signal I got while traveling down 1-15 towards San Diego.
