Silent AM's...

Speaking of silent AM's, here in the upstate, the ever-silent WCSZ 1070 is still off the air. Their most recent request for Notification of Suspension of Operations / Request for Silent STA filed in September 2009 was denied by the FCC. I guess the FCC assumes they are still on the air. If you remember, somebody broke into the station in December 2009 and picked the MW-50 apart. Anybody know if there are any plans to ever put this seemingly snakebit station back on the air? I rode up Hwy 25 by there the other day and the whole place is overtaken by tall weeds. Sad to see any station off the air but especially this one which has quite a history with its WHYZ glory days. Back in the day, you could do a riding tour of all 3 of Greenville's powerhouse AM's with a very short drive up Hwy 25 from WQOK 1440, passing by WESC 660 and then by WHYZ.

What exactly does Glenn Cherry want to do with WCSZ? Why hasn't he attempted to put the station back together? Does anyone know anything about this guy?

i think the fcc is too understaffed to deal with it. the break-in was a joke. the average copper thief would not really know where to look as it appears they did in this break-in. owner is probably enjoying insurance claims and writing off his losses on his taxes. someone with money will have to step up to revive this frequency. it was a monster in it's day. glenn cherry wants someone to name a price.

I noticed Spanish language music on 1070 over the weekend. The signal was fine in Greenville on Sunday, but I dialed it up the next day in Spartanburg and is was pretty weak, so it may not be running full power or the antenna system is degraded. Hard to tell if it is back on for good or on just enough to keep the license active.

All three towers were dark before the station was even broken into. They used to keep just the middle tower lit for a while after the station went dark, but there have been no lights period on any of the towers for a long time now. Can they get fined for that (by the FAA, I guess, I'm not sure if it would be them or the FCC) if they are not lit at all?

Yes, WCSZ is back on but with limited power... as they are running non-directional. I think THOSE towers are rather short and don't have to be lit.

1170 in Lexington is a back on as WDEK.

I noticed WCSZ has been granted STA to operate non-directional at 2 kW daytime and 350 watts night. They have also applied for a CP to permanently operate daytime non-directional, utilizing the center tower.

Check out the last couple of pages of the engineering narrative: https://licensing.fcc.gov/cdbs/CDBS_Attachment/getattachment.jsp?appn=101402938&qnum=5110&copynum=1&exhcnum=1

Reckon the FCC will grant this? They have a much stronger signal here in Easley with their 2 kW non-directional than they ever did at 50 kW directional.

The towers are required to be lit. The paperwork (telegram) from the FAA that dated back 50+ years that gave an exemption disappeared years ago.

Didn't an AM in Greenwood get visited last year because of missing tower lights?

The posts keep disappearing here, but in response to one of the WCSZ posts, what format are they running?

They are running a Spanish format. I thought maybe they were running a simulcast of one of the other Spanish stations in the area. I tuned around but it doesn't seem to match 910 or 103.9. Anyone know? I noticed that the Spanish formatted "Radio Luz" WPJF 1260 (formerly WMUU-AM) went silent on 1/14/2011 because of financial difficulties. Doesn't make any sense but could that programming be running on 1070?

Hmm...interesting. I doubt it's connected with 103.9/910 since Davidson doesn't look to be doing very well and 103.9 doesn't do that great as it is. I wonder if the group that was running 1440/WGVL under an LMA from CC could be involved?

Sad to see 1260 silent. That frequency has been on since the '40s, but I had my doubts on the viability of Spanish religious.
