Silliest TV Station Slogan

What's the silliest slogan/catchphrase you've ever heard for a TV station?

My nomination has to be WCIX-6 in Miami, which for a time many years ago actually called itself "The Station with Six Appeal."

I kid you not.....

KNXV-TV/15 Phoenix: Many idiotic slogans

"Bluebird of happy news" - I wasn't in Phoenix when they signed on, but what in the heck did that mean? According to Wikipedia, they had a guy in a bird suit in a chopper giving grief to the other (legit, other than maybe KTVK in 1980) news operations in town. I don't want to know how that looked.

We're number Fun" - Huh?

"No chitchat, more news" - No viewers, less news than KTVK, KSAZ, and KPNX.

"Your Valley news leader." They've never been any more than a local joke since owner Scripps-Howard literally stole ABC from KTVK in 1994. KNXV has never led anything in their almost 12 years of having local news.

Link: Wikipedia - KNXV-TV

"When you're good, you get watched." Lots of stations in the early '70s. The station I saw with that slogan was WFRV-TV/5 Green Bay, WI circa 1972. File that under "No s#!t."

How were they doing in the ratings back then? Maybe "13 Strong" was a reference to that.

Speaking of Toledo, WNWO went with "Your Most Local News Station" in the late 90s. It never quite rolled off the tongue smoothly, no matter how many times reporters included it in their outs.
______________

> Back in the day, in this case the 70's and 80's WSPD/WTVG was a peacock affiliate and we all know that NBC didn't get it together until the mid to late 80's. From a local standpoint, it has always been 1 WTOL 2 WTVG 6 WNWO oops i forgot Toledo is only a four station market HA-HA!!! Channel 24 has always sucked. The only good thing about WNWO is Jim Tichy. He has been there for 34 years by my count and has survived 1 network swap numerous owners and crappy news ratings. Maybe the new owners should sell the station to tichy and he could turn it in to an all sports outlet and maybe make some money with it. Channel 24 has been passed around more times than a puck on a colorado avalanche power play. I've seen their news since they switched to NBC and their news department makes les nessman look like walter cronkite.

Another one from Phoenix... KTVK's "3TV: The Place with More Stuff". Sounds like an 8-year-old came up with it.

KOIN/Portland: "News That's to the Point and Won't Waste Your Time." The slogan itself is a waste of time. I think they've cut it down to just "News That's to the Point" now.

Okay, that's pretty bad...

Seems that back in the 70s and 80s, a lot of stations liked to attach adjectives to their channel numbers. There's, of course, "11 Alive", which is still used to this day on WXIA/Atlanta. I've always thought, "If you're not 11 Alive, then are you 11 Dead?" I also remember hearing ones like "Solid 6" (WDBO/Orlando, now WKMG), "Active 8" (WQAD/Quad Cities), etc.
______________

IIRC, the slogan they used was "Active 8, the best news of all..." (or "for all...").

Which was immediately reworked by the
local media watchers (here and elsewhere)
as "the place with more fluff."

Tulsa is blessed with two! The first one is KJRH-2 (NBC)'s "2 Works For You!" (Does that mean all of Green Country has to sign all their paychecks?) Even the anchors and reportes are fonted as "John Smith Works For You" IIRC, and its in the reporter's close of all their packages... and the stations website is not www.kjrh.com, its www.2worksforyou.com! (Actually, it's both... just like Certs!)

The second one is KOKI-23 (FOX)'s "Breaking News, Breaking Weather, Solving Problems". I mean, what a train wreck of a slogan!

As for the 2 other big network affiliates, KOTV-6 (CBS) calls itself "The News On 6", with a slogan of "Anchors that report the news, know the news... the News on 6." They are the market leaders for local news.

KTUL-8, which for years was "Oklahoma's Newschannel", recently changed to just "Newschannel 8" woth the slogan of "On Your Side". Yes, they are scrambling... with the defection of their high profile chief meteoroligist to KOTV and the mysterious termination of their award winning sports anchor, KTUL has been in a freefall. Top that off with the loss of their powerhouse early access draws of Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune, and it's no suprise that in the two years since I 've moved here to the Tulsa area, KTUL's makeover is the only station change I've seen.
______________

Ha! Anyone can come up with a dorky slogan. WDAU in Scranton, PA took the next step and changed its call sign to WYOU and made innumerable (and forgettable) slogans and puns with "You" as the linchpin

Not too long ago, WDIV/4 in Detroit started using "The Power of 4", and they even use that in their news opens. And in the same market, WXYZ/7 used "Where 7 Stands for News" for a number of years.

Someone mentioned WNWO in Toledo - now they're calling themselves "Toledo's Weather Station". That sounds to me like they don't have local news, just weather reports.

And let us never forget "The Block" on WUAB/43.

In the 1990s, CFPL/CKNX/CHWI in Southwestern Ontario called themselves "Your News Leader in Southwestern Ontario". The thing was though, CFPL/CKNX were beat in the ratings at that time by CKCO in the Kitchener-London extended market, and in Windsor, CHWI was beat by CBET and possibly even the Detroit stations. So none of them were news leaders, except for CFPL right in the London central market.
______________

As for Channel 24, yes they do market themselves as TOLEDO'S WEATHER STATION because now they have Boner... oops I mean Blizzard Bill Spencer as their "chief Moron... oops I mean meteorologist. Any station that has a meterologist that uses his nickname along with his real name on the air can't be taken to seriously. A possible exception to that last statement, Channel 9 here in Denver had "Stormy" Rottman and "Sunny" Roseman for years. The big difference was they didn't present the weather like a circus clown they were no nonsense down to business types that knew their stuff. In closing, here's something to think about, In the mid 80's I believe it was, channel 24 had a meterologist by the name of Karl Spring. One night during severe weather his forecast was for a 70% chance of showers and t-storms. He then went on to say that it's not a 100% chance of rain unless you're outside getting rained on. No sh*t sherlock. Pretty hard to take a station like that seriously, isn't it.

From Virginia...

WTVR channel 6 in Richmond back in the 80s, the slogan was "number one in your eyes".

In Norfolk WTKR channel 3, I saw some old TV Guides from the 80s where they used the slogan "from the land of the 3" or something like it. I assume they used this on air.

Meanwhile around the same time, maybe a tad earlier WVEC channel 13 was using the slogan "take it to the top". The slogan itself was not really all THAT bad but after watching one their promos using it, well that ws silly. One I remember had these people dancing around a supermarket. Even the cashier was singing along "take it to the top", and there was "13" all over the place. Now this reminds me of something. WVEC is owned by Belo. Back in the 80s there was a grocery store chain in the Norfolk-Virginia Beach area called "Belo". Wonder if there was a connection between the two?

Another interesting old TV slogan, well questionable one to say the least was the 1986 WDCA-TV 20( Washington DC )slogan. At this time they started calling themselves "DC 20". Thats cool but they also started calling themselves "your Super Station". What was weird about that one was this was done AFTER WDCA stopped being a WTBS/WGN/WSBK-like super station.

Oh does anybody remember when local stations took the 1983 Taco tune "Puttin on the Ritz" and turned that into promos saying "puttin On The Hits". I believe Phuladelphia's WPHL-TV 17 did just that.

Scripps' WEWS/Cleveland and Hearst-Argyle's WLWT/Cincinnati both call their doppler radars "Power of 5". Both stations are on channel 5; and apparently WEWS has access to 5 radar sites (not sure if that's the case with WLWT).

WEWS: http://www.channelcincinnati.com/weather/index.html

A couple other ones I just remembered:

"Fresh Air" (KUTV/Salt Lake City)
"You'll Say 'I See'" (WOI/Ames-Des Moines and sister stations; they call their newscasts "Eyewitness News". See?)
______________

WNWO's ratings would certainly indicate as much, as would the fact that they're the only Toledo station which forces Buckeye CableSystem to black out all network programming on its Detroit counterpart. About the only thing they have going for 'em is Browns preseason games.

WBBM in Chicago was using "CBS 2 Works For You!" earlier this decade. At the time, its 10 pm news ratings were so bad (getting trounced by Simpsons reruns on WFLD and Friends on WGN, they've gotten a little better since then) that a local sports-radio wiseacre joked that the slogan meant their news anchors would come to your house and perform odd jobs if you actually watched their news.

Around this same time I moved to reception range of Rockford's stations, and encountered WQRF's "Everybody's Doin' It, Fox 39!" slogan. Who came up with that one, Beavis or Butt-Head?

Hands down award goes to WIAT-42 in Birmingham: "It's About Time". Yeah, it's about time to see if we can pull better ratings for our 10 pm newscast than Andy Griffith reruns on WTTO-21. Mercifully, that slogan has been retired.
